Helen Mayberry Obituary

Helen Mayberry was born in Los Angeles CA May 23, 1924 to Don and Catalina Godman. Although she was born in Los Angeles, she spent the majority of her youth on Catalina Island. She attended Monrovia High School and graduated on June 4, 1937. Helen went on to study at the University of Southern California (USC) where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She graduated first in her class on June 15, 1946 in the Rose Gardens. Helen began her registered nursing career at the Los Angeles County Hospital in the Emergency Room. It was there that she met and fell in love with her husband, George. The couple were married April 20, 1950 and in 1951 they moved to Las Vegas, NV. In the next 7 years they had four children. Her husband, George passed away in 1964. Although Helen was busy raising her four young children on her own, she still found time to be in service in her community. Many thanks to all who commented about our Mom. She was truly a remarkable woman who led a full and fulfilling life. She managed to keep a house over our heads, food on the table, and saw to it that we all got a good education at Gorman, and beyond. How she did that with a deceased husband and four maniac kids, is a testament to her character.

She was a woman who was accomplished in her own right, during her years she caught a Marlin, was a Licensed Pilot, dove for Abalone in Catalina Island. She became a Nurse who was as at ease in an Emergency Room in Los Angeles as she was doing physicals for the football team at Gorman. She and Doc Romeo served our Community their entire adult lives.

It was she who taught us growing up how to serve others. Whenever any of the Priests or Nuns at St. Anne's or Gorman were ill, she would bring them medicine from work after she had already put in a long day, or if necessary took care of them at the office with Doc Romeo.

God truly blessed us children with that Christian woman. She taught us by how she lived her life not just what she said. Thanks again my friends, for your kind words.

To all the Mayberry Family Mrs.Mayberry was a true Christian lady. She was like a second Mom to me. When my Mom died 2 years ago she called me and wrote to me several times to see how I was doing. I will never forget that.
Mrs. Mayberry I will miss you. Enjoy Heaven.

Mike and Mayberry sibs:

I want to express my deep condolences on the passing of your Mom. She was such a kind woman and I saw that most of all in the offices of Dr. Don Romeo, for whom she worked many years. Despite my aversion to most things and places medical, Mrs. Mayberry (I never did call her Helen) always made me feel at ease, in part because she also recognized me as a classmate of Mike and son of her friend Solange D'Hooghe, my mom, who passed in 2000. Thanks for sharing her with all of us over the years. Jef, Susan (wife) and Hattie Solange (daughter) Benedetti

My prayers and deepest sympathy go out to the Mayberry Family. Mrs. Mayberry was a focal point in my life as a child. Margy and I were best friends all during grade school and I was always at their house. She always greeted me warmly sitting in her chair by the front screen door. She was a wonderful lady and I was blessed to have known her. God bless you, Mrs. Mayberry. My heart is sad.

My sincere condolences to the entire Mayberry family. As a youngster I thought your mom was very stern, but as I grew I found her to be very sweet, kind, and generous with herself and her time. She leaves behind a great legacy in the wonderful children she raised, and those that they are raising. You will miss her, but her spirit will always be alive with you all. Rest in God's peace Mrs. Mayberry.

To the entire Mayberry family, Please accept my dearest thoughts & prayers to ALL of you! Helen was quite the character, a charter member of the "Motley Crew" of Las Vegas. I grew up with Helen & the family here in LV, and also had the pleasure of working with her at my dad's (Dr Donald Romeo) office! Helen worked for him for 25+ years, she was the glue that held it all together! You will be greatly missed, Helen. Now go play some cards with my Mom & Dad.....
