I met Sylvia Speed today and heard the story of her husband, James Speed. I wish I had known how this rising star basketball player survived a devastating medical condition, but Sylvia was gracious in describing what he went through and how he survived and lived and worked. Thank you, Sylvia.

I was a senior at CE Byrd High School in 1968. I went to see James play and was very impressed. I went on to play basketball at LA Tech and was disappointed to learn he was headed West instead of playing locally. I knew he was a tremendous talent and was saddened to learn that he became blind. But true champions overcome adversity. He proved he was a true champion - rest in peace!

I was very saddened to hear that we lost James. It seems like yesterday that we talked, laughed and enjoyed each other as we reminisced about friends and family in Shreveport and Bossier. James was a true inspiration and friend to the Myles family. We will miss him dearly. My prayers are with his family. God bless you.

To the family of James Speed,
I was very saddened to hear of his departure today from thislife. However, he will live on through the many lives that he touched here in Louisiana. He was such an inspiration to all that he came in touch with because of his strength and concern for others. May the Lord keep each of you during this difficult time. And it is our hope that we will see all of our love ones again one day in the life where there will be no hurt or pain. In loving memories of a fun classmate,a great basketball player and community member.

I will miss James. We would talk mostly during Basketball season, always telling me my daddy(Crockett, our High school coach) couldn't Coach.LOL!! We had some wonderful times together in High school. I would always tell him, "He(Star Player) was the go to guy on the the team and I was the come to guy(Statistician) to see how many points he scored." A Friend always!!! To the Speed Family, You're in our Prayers. May your memories bring comfort.
