JOHN GRANT Obituary

LT. COL. JOHN GRANT U.S. Marine Corps, Retired John Hinemon Grant, of Las Vegas, passed away at home Sept. 22, 2012. He was born May 15, 1943 in Fort Monmouth, N.J. to John W. and Martha E. Grant. John's family had a long history of military service dating back generations. After graduating in 1961 from Bordentown Military Institute in New Jersey, he chose to pursue the same path. In 1965, John graduated from Pennsylvania Military College and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Serving for 20 years, he had a very distinguished military career. John served two tours of duty in Vietnam and flew A-4 fighter jets. He earned a Bronze Star Medal and three Navy Commendation Medals (among others) before retiring in 1985 as a lieutenant colonel. John earned graduate degrees from both Pennsylvania Military College and the University of Southern California. We can all be proud that men like John Grant choose to serve our country. Sailing became his passion after retiring from the Marines. In 1987 and 1988, he was part of the "Stars and Stripes" America's Cup team that won the Cup back from Australia, and defended it from a New Zealand challenge. John continued to work closely with America's Cup teams through the early 1990's. After his sailing days, John moved to Las Vegas and partnered with Robert Lyons and John Kohls. They merged their businesses to form Logistics Concepts Inc. Together they provided their services and products to military and law enforcement agencies to help keep all of us safer. He was preceded in death by his father in 1957; his mother in 1994; and his brother, Stephen Grant, Sept. 7, 2012. John is survived by his sister, Penelope Husson of Las Vegas; brother, David Grant of Monmouth, N.J.; former wife, Suzanne Grant of San Diego; son, Jeff Grant of Loveland, Colo.; daughter, Amy Vanderheyden of El Cajon, Calif.; four grandchildren; and nephews, Matt Husson of Virginia Beach, Va., Stephen Husson and Eric Husson, both of Las Vegas. Among those closest to John were his dogs. He was preceded in death by Jasmine, Maxie and Xena. He is survived by Thor. John will join his parents at Arlington National Cemetery. He will receive a military service and burial Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. You can honor John by giving to the Wounded Warrior Project.

John was my idol and my mentor, I´ll never forget the day I met him I thought I was looking at Rambo. He would take me sailing and surfing and take me to the air show at the El Toro marine base and everything was VIP in his Jaguar with the steering wheel on the right hand side. Once he paid me oil every ounce of wood on his 52 foot sailboat and I loved it. Can´t wait to see him again. And I had a dog named Xenia as well go figure :)

Hard to believe so many years since John has passed. I met him in college through his sister Penny, and he would drop in over the years, no matter where I was living, for a surprise visit. I think of him so often and miss those visits. So many fond memories of his sister, two brothers, and their mom.

I pulled a little prank on John in August of 2010. I had stayed with him at his home in LV for months while we worked on a project together. He had an extensive library, which included books written by Dennis Connor about the America II experiences they shared.
When I returned to FL, I looked to buy a book to have him sign, and to my surprise, there was a little bookstore selling a pack of five paperbacks. I bought them and had them here when next he visited.
He was visiting my company in FL and I had handed out the five books to various employees , having them pop from doorways asking for his autograph. At about the third request he realized what was going on and erupted with a stream of cursing about it, laughing all the while.
John was a marvelous mentor, and I think about him with a smile nearly every day.

I just thought of John and was looking to see if I could find him and to my shock, found he had passed. I was a team-member with him during the 1995-1997 Stars and Stripes campaign and remember all those times experiencing his "character" and tenacity. "Rambo" as he was aptly named at one point got hit on the head by the boom of Stars and Stripes, right next to me where we were both grinding. John had no idea where he was for two legs of the practice course but he still ground away on the handles...truly a determined guy being the first to attempt to bench-press 300# during our training. He had that mischevious smile and sense of duty rare these days. I'm proud to have called him a friend and he will be missed. Rest in peace buddy, you were called home far too soon. Semper Fi! The world is a poorer place without John "Rambo" Grant. We had a lot of fun together over 36 years in the service and out. He's my Most Unforgetable Chacter, best friend, favorite Marine and all around good guy despite his best efforts to hide all those facts.

My condolences to his family. I loved him too.

John and I were friends and classmates at a USMC school in 1969. He was one of the most talented, energetic, and charismatic characters I ever met. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing.

A long time ago a man came into to my life and changed my whole world to this day. Took me everywhere, taught me things, inspired me, he was my mentor as i was a young man. Probably the most single influential thing that ever happened to me. John, in case you didnt know, that man was you! Ive missed you, Love Natch. P.S. i named my son after you.

I live a couple houses from John's house. I only met him when I bought my house 2.5 yrs ago, but he was an incredible man, very kind and always had interesting tales to tell. We had great conversations; especially about sailing. I learned he was in San Diego where I've lived there since 1967 & still do. We got a kick out of finding out I watched the Stars and Stripes take the trophy back from Australia while he was on board it. He was a very kind man, a nice friend and I'll miss his presence. Our neighborhood and the world has lost an amazing man.
