Joseph Fink Obituary

JOSEPH FINK M.D. Joseph L. Fink M.D. passed away peacefully Dec. 1, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. He was a resident of Las Vegas for 49 years. Dr. Fink was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II at Alamogordo Air Force Base, N.M., and attended medical school at the University of Michigan, where he graduated first in his class. Dr. Joseph Fink is survived by his loving wife, of 61 years, Charlotte; nieces, B.F. Graham and Judy Ballin Ph.D.; and nephews, Howard Fink, Gerald Shulman M.D. and Joel Shulman M.D. Dr. Fink moved to Las Vegas and established his Las Vegas medical practice in 1962. As his local reputation grew as a talented physician and diagnostician, he found himself making so many house calls to Caesars Palace and other hotels that he finally made the decision to accept repeated offers to move his medical practice into Caesars Palace Hotel. When the hotel opened in 1966, a medical suite had been built exclusively for Dr. Fink. He and his patients finally made the move to Caesars Palace in 1972. This marked the beginning of a medical practice that was like no other. Dr. Fink's life was devoted to his family and to his patients. He and his son, Gordon, "Gordie," both shared a love of sports. When Gordie was a young boy, Dr. Fink supported the local baseball teams throughout Las Vegas. Over the years, they took many trips to L.A. for Dodger's games and rarely missed a UNLV Runnin' Rebels game or boxing championship. The untimely death of his only son, Gordie Fink, in 1998, was a tragedy and a tremendous loss to Dr. Fink and Charlotte. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Myron Fink. Dr. Fink's second home was Desert Springs Hospital. He is credited with the hospital's initial success. Dr. Fink was passionate about providing the best care for his patients, rich or poor - it didn't matter. His patients included entertainers, movie stars, gamblers, politicians, boxers, hotel owners and executives; his practice also included hundreds of local Las Vegans who adored him. He never went on vacation, shunned the limelight, and was a phone call away if someone needed his help. He was one-in-a-million and will be greatly missed. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E. Eldorado Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89120. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dr. Joseph Fink's name to The Gordie Fink Memorial Scholarship, c/o Public Education Foundation, 3360 W. Sahara Ave., #160, Las Vegas, NV 89102.

Dr. Joseph Louis Fink was a great man who had a great son.
I first knew Dr. Fink as the father of my childhood best friend, Gordie. Gordie and I were instant best friends from the day we first met playing baseball together on the Paradise Palms field in April 1962. Both Dr. Fink and Mrs. Fink treated me like family ever since.
After my father passed in 1967, Dr. Fink took me under his wing, making certain I wanted for nothing growing up. As I trace back the years, I understand now the devotion to his son was truly remarkable.
The last time I saw Dr. Fink was at the remembrance service held for Gordie in 1998. I recall one of the speakers saying something like, "Gordie's up there giving God the best picks on college football for this weekend's games." I looked at Dr. Fink and he chuckled. He knew as well as I did how far that missed the mark on Gordie's true heart. One of the greatest regrets of my life was that I didn't grab the microphone then and there and correct the record. I'd have said, "Gordie's up there rounding second and heading for third...he slides, he's in there with a triple." Gordie and I often talked about what we were going to do in our first big league at bat. Gordie said he was "going to hit a triple because it denotes power and speed." Dr. Fink knew the power of his son's heart and mind. He helped it flourish. I think Dr. Fink and Mrs. Fink reveled in their son's brilliance and moral compass.
Well done, Dr. Fink. May you rest in peace good sir.

There was only one Joseph Fink. He was the only doctor in Las Vegas I was comfortable with. He could take one look at me and just "know". I am the violinist who played at Gordie's funeral service. I only wish I had known about this in time to play for Joe. Nobody cared for my mother as he did, and nobody cared about me that way either. He saw me through two divorces and some pretty horrific medical problems. Dr. Joe is in Paradise now, no longer able to be the oldest practicing physician in the state of Nevada. Dr. Joe was like no other "show business doctor". Dr. Fink told the truth. That is how I would like him to be remembered, perhaps with these words he gave me: When you cater to the patient you soon have a dead patient. (Joe was the man who refused to give Elvis narcotics.) and gave me so much counsel when I was loosing my mother to heart disease. My life for two decades was better because of the time I had Joe Fink for my physician. I have a wonderful doctor now in L.A. But not close.
Doctor, Friend, Mentch. I will always love you like a father.

We moved to Las Vegas in 1962. I remember Dr. Fink making house calls (sometimes late in the evening) to see my Dad. I babysat for Gordie several times. I could tell many stories about Dr. Fink, but I will leave it at "he was a great person and a wonderful caring Doctor who left a big impression on me and everybody he came into contact with". Shalom Dr. fink, you must be needed in heaven. Joseph, Louise, Ronnie & Mike Skurow.

On behalf of Charlotte Fink, I want to send a thank you, to all of you, for the kind words expressed in his guest book. Dr. Joe, Dr. Fink - whatever you knew him as - would be embarrassed at all the praise, but secretly appreciate it. He was one in a million, as was his son Gordie. Thank you to all.

My family and I were lucky enough to know Dr. Fink, his wife, Charlotte, and his beloved son, Gordy, almost from our first days in Las Vegas in 1964. Little league, Rebels games at the Convention Center Rotunda, I can't begin to convey how important he was to me, my parents, and Las Vegas. Step on a nail, call Dr. Joe. Spider bite, call Dr. Joe. My thoughts are with you, Mrs. Fink.

My favorite memory is the vision of my dad and Dr. Fink waiting by their cars outside Robert E Lake to bring Gordie and me home from school. I lost my good friend Gordie in 1998; I can only hope he and his dad are watching the Detroit Tigers somewhere together.

Truly Dr. Fink was that one inspiration and guiding light above all others for the practice of good medicine, and without reservation. A leader of academics no challenge was ever too large or small to engage. He is every bit a part of the Las Vegas history and tradition and will be forever remembered, and very much appreciated - -

Dr. Fink was a brilliant man with and a kind soul. Being raised in Las Vegas, Dr. Fink was a dear friend of my family. When entering into the medical field, Dr. Fink was kind to bring me into his practice and hold me under his wings. He truelly loved what he did and whether it be a hotel guest, local patient, or a friend, he would never hesitate to help someone in need. Over the years I grew close to Dr. Fink and his wife Charlotte. I send my condolences to Charlotte and the family. Dr. Fink will forever be in my heart and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I met Dr. Fink in 1973. His office was on Charleston Blvd and Teri was his nurse. He became my mother Catherine Ryan Nylander's and my doctor. He gave my mother his personal phone number and told her she could call anytime. Not only a great doctor, he was truly a kind, thoughtful and generous person.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sometimes special people come into your life for a short period of time that was Dr. Fink. During the 1980's I met Dr. Fink at The Pasta Shop. My family owned the restaurant and Dr. Fink would come in to pick up his to go orders. He was a kind man. If he arrived before his order was ready, he would patiently wait. When I found out he was a doctor I apologized for calling him Mr. Fink but he did not stand on formality. It has probably 25 years ago that I last saw Dr. Fink and I still remember him as a caring and gentle man. He will be missed.

Babe and I have wonderful memories of Joe, dating back to our days together at Receiving Hospital in Detroit.

We enjoyed visiting with him in Las Vegas numerous times over the years, and when I became ill in Las vegas, he was a tremendous help and comfort to me.

His wit and wisdom have been a large part of our lives.

My deepest sympathy to Dr Fink's family. He was a "one in a million" doctor/human being. I met and knew him as I was an employee of Dr M S Ahmed, his fellow cardiologist at Desert Springs Hospital. The medical community of Las Vegas has truly lost an awesome comrade.
