Joshua S. Harmon Obituary

Joshua S. Harmon's smile got him in trouble on his first day of boot camp. He couldn't stop grinning when an officer gave him orders. "At boot camp, he was the first guy off the bus who had to do push-ups," Ron Vines said. Harmon, 20, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio, was killed Aug. 22 when his helicopter crashed in Multaka. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Schofield Barracks. He loved music and fast cars. He played guitar with his bands Subhumans and Headfirst. A medic who had won the medal of valor for saving a wounded soldier's life, Harmon was taking biology classes online and preparing for medical school. While Harmon was on vacation in Qatar, he snapped a picture of himself and three locals playing a board game. He didn't know the men, the game or even the language, but he was still able to coax a smile for the camera. "That's the kind of kid he was," said his mother, Donna Harmon. "He could walk into a room of strangers and leave with 10 friends." He also is survived by his wife, Kristin. The two married by proxy May 10 and were hoping to have a large wedding next summer.

Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death , I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Joshua, I pray that you are in a place that is full of love, light, happiness, and laughter. A few days ago, I met 2 optimistic young men, with grand plans for their futures. Though complete strangers they asked me what my best advice to them would be. I told them "To believe in yourself". They reminded me of you. I know you believed in yourself during your last days on this earth and helped many people. We continue to remember and miss you, pray, and believe in you.

A field of crosses
Marks the silent resting place
Of the brave who served.
By Kelly Roper

Dear Joshua, I am thinking of you on this very hot August day, much like the one in 2007, when we received the news that you were gone. It was surreal, yet I remember it like it was yesterday. How I hope and pray that you are in a wonderful eternal after-life, more joyous than we can even imagine. You will always be missed and remembered.

From Laurence Binyon's 1914 poem "For the Fallen"

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe. (9-12)

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them. (13-16)

Hey there Tucker medic!! It’s been a long time. My last name has changed since 2005, back then you called me KP. We were in the same platoon and had a lot of fun and laughs together when we were finally able to have some freedom.

We had a day where our drill sergeants started passing out duty assignments and those of us going overseas were in some sort of lottery. Who would get Hawaii? Germany? Korea? You got your orders, Crombie got his, Grey got his and I got mine. It could have so easily been the other way around. When I heard the news about your unit and what happened to you I was sick to my stomach. Why didn’t you come to Germany with the rest of us? Why didn’t I get those orders to Hawaii instead? I have spent over a decade struggling with not only your passing but also the guilt that it wasn’t me on those orders instead.

I wanted you to know that I will always remember you and your unique form of humor lol I am currently doing a TV show with Montel Williams discussing military service and sacrifice. I have told them about you. Your name, your service and your sacrifice has not been forgotten. I will make sure that it stays that way by telling the entire nation about you. Rest easy..

I often think of that hot August day when we learned the news. You were only 20, at that time 10 years was half of the life you had lived, now it has been 14 years. It's a deep sadness right to the core that all of us have had to learn to live with. Joshua, we miss you.

Why we post online is a mystery. Hope you know how much I wish life had unfolded differently for you. 12 years later and still takes my breath away that you are gone. God be with you, Joshua. Eternal happiness -you deserve!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Harmon Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

I was friends with josh in elementary and junior high. I remember going roller skating with him and holding his hand. I will always remember the smile he would always have on his face,no matter the situation you could always turn to him for smile, hug or a shoulder to cry on. It saddens me that someone one so smart so young and brave could be taken from us . He always said he was going into the army ,I remember him talking about it as a kid, it was the one thing he wanted to do... We love you josh I pray for you and your family every night. R.I.P you will always be loved and never forgotten...

Dear Harmon Family,
I am truley sadden by the loss of your loved one, hero and friend, may God continue to heal your hearts and hold Josh in the palm of his hands. I live here in Cleveland, Ohio and have driven many times on CPL Joshua Harmon Highway and always thought...who is that? It has to be someone special. I found out today....it is someone special at no suprise. I met Josh's mom (Donna) and his brother (Jason) today at their home doing work for a utility company. I talk to them for a period of time about Jason, his wife Kristin and the dreams that young man had in his life. Let me tell you from someone that didn't know him or anything about him but knows a little now, this country lost a real AMERICAN HERO and a soldier who's life should be a pedal stool for others. I am truely touched by this young man's life and what he stood for. You would feel the same to if you talked to this family. May God hold you Hero and let your spirit run free.....God Bless this family and bring peace to their hearts.

To the family of Cpl. Josh Harmon:

My son served as a Combat Medic with Josh in their deployment to Iraq in 2007, and is now back there on his second deployment, this time at FOB Brassfield-Mora (JSS Love). This past Monday, which was Memorial Day, I received an extensive e-mail from my son, the purpose of which was to honor those he knew who have been injured or killed in OIF, and, in particular, to honor Josh's memory.

He recalled when he was first introduced to Josh, their supervisor told him that Josh was "the best medic in the Battalion". My son then continued to write about how he learned from Josh and they came to be friends. It is clear that he had a strong respect for Josh, and I remember talking to my son on the phone a few days after Josh was taken, and how saddened he was.

Please know we are thankful for the Heros like Josh who have kept us free.

Hi Josh. I just wanted to write and let you know that Kristin and I have become very good friends. It's funny b/c when Mike and I were talking about getting married, he mentioned to me about how a buddy of his got married via "proxy." And I later come to find out that it was you. I know that if you and Mike were still alive, we'd all be living in Hawaii together, and I would've met Kristin anyway, but you truly have a wonderful woman. It's nice b/c her and I have become close, and it's nice to have someone to talk too who's in the same situation. I hope you guys have a great Christmas celebrating Jesus's birthday. We all miss and love you guys so much, and we know that we'll see you again. Tell Mike I love and miss him, and we'll see each other again soon.....save Kristin and I a seat!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To The Harmon Family I again send my warm thoughts and wishes for continued strength in your day to day dealing with this great loss. CPL Harmon (Joshua) was a great friend of mine as I was stationed with him in Kirkuk, Iraq and spent alot of time with him... Not a day goes by that I do not think of him especially since I have worn a ID tag in his honor since my return to Hawaii 10/07. I just left Hawaii 25 Jun 08 and now heading to Ft Hood in Texas but never will forget the friendship with this great Soldier with the heart of gold and the smile that was so very infectious to us all. To his Wife, Father, Mother, Brother and other family members and friends... He is no doubt at peace and doing great work for the Lord our God. Know that he is gone but never ever forgotten. His kind nature and friendliness will be a part of us all now and always. Rest well my dear friend Joshua...

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Cpl. Joshua s. Harmon our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Cpl. Harmon. And to Cpl. Harmon it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Cpl. Harmon, you are a brave Warrior, a Patriot and our Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,385 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Cpl. Harmon’s family and loved ones.

To the Beloved Family of Joshua:
The days pass, and God allows the loving and beautiful memories of Joshua to continue.

Along with these memories that fill your hearts, your minds will always know and remember Joshua's amazing accomplishments.

But most meaningful of all, at the very soul of your existence, you will always have the fulfillment that Joshua dedicated his entire lifetime, and his life, in total service to his country and to his fellow man.

More than a Hero, he is the Role Model that all human beings can look to with respect, humility, hope and love.

We certainly do.

We ask our Loving Father to hold you in the palm of His loving hands, until the very day when we are united again with Joshua and all of our loved ones.

To The Harmon Family,
Words cannot express my feelings regarding the loss of Josh. May the Lord our God give you all strength during this hour of need. He was not only a great soldier but a great friend, son, brother, husband, student and mentor to those that knew and loved him. He was the type of guy that brought a smile to all as he walked into a room and even when I was not feeling at my best he had the ability to start one of his many motivational discussions and it would get me all charged up to deal with all that came my way. Josh touched the hearts of so many and shall always be remembered for his ability to put others before himself and to go above and beyond in all that he did.

He use to talk about his lovely new wife, his hard working parents and his brother all the time. He loved them dearly but he also loved his mission as a medic which he took very seriously and it showed in the very caring way he took care of his troops. His aspirations to be a medical professional were always spoke of as his future goal for he and his wife.

I will never forget you Josh... We loved Josh but God loved him best and he will now go and do great work for the Lord our God.

Rest in Peace My Dear Friend...HOOAH!

Even when exhausted he pushed forward. He helped save the lives of many soldiers. Dearest Harmon Family,
I write this entry with such dichotomy; such sadness for his loss and yet such joy for us to have known Josh ~On one hand my heart is broken to see such a beautiful soul taken so early from this earth ~and yet I know that none of us really knows as to what length a lifetime is truly measured. If one's lifetime is measured by accomplishment; service and caring for others, love of family, friends and country,~ then Josh's lifetime was full and long.
It breaks my heart to see my dearest friends Leslie and Rich suffer such a loss, all of us who knew Josh will miss him along with you. I think back to a darling little boy sitting on my porch so long ago, as American as "apple pie", his little face was truly that. I see the pictures of him as a proud soldier, so mature and strong, and yet within his eyes still see that sweet little boy, and within those eyes you see what made him special. My heart breaks for his darling wife Kristin, his mother and brother Jason, and all his young friends who are so crushed by his loss. In order to be missed so greatly one must have had a strong presence~ Josh did, and for that we are truly grateful.

My heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you. Joahua you are my hero and you will NEVER be forgotten.

When I first met Josh, he was a smiling youngster who came to the Wild West with his Dad . They were quite a team in those days. I remember the brown felt western hat he proudly wore and his grin as wide as all out doors. He was always right up in front, line dancing with the older young men, and keeping up with the best of them. He was determined even then to excel. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Josh as a young man and I am sorry about that. We all have our special memories of Josh and mine will be his smile as he looked at his Dad when they shared time together at the Wild West.

A number of weeks ago when I shared an evening with Rich and Leslie, Rich showed me the photo of Josh he carried in his wallet. You could hear the pride in his voice and see the sparkle in his eyes when he spoke of Josh. Rich was so very proud of the kind, dedicated, responsible young man Josh had become and rightly so. Rich, you set a fine example of service for Josh and Josh followed in his own way.

In reading the many tributes to Josh it is obvious he touched the lives of many and they will forever be better people for having known and loved him. Thank you and God Bless you, Josh, for your unselfish devotion to your Men and to your County.

May God Bless the Harmon's with his healing love.

I wanted to write and send my deepest sympathy for the loss of your son. My fiance, Mike Hook, was also aboard that helicopter, and went to be with the Lord that day. I truly believe that they're watching over us, and are our guardian angels. Mike and I are expecting our first son in a couple weeks, and I know Mike is with me and your son is with you. God Bless.

Thank you all for your kind words and condolences regarding my son, Corporal Joshua Scott Harmon. Joshua came in to this world on November 25, 1986, full of life and with a spirit of adventure. He was always well liked by his teachers and classmates. Joshua enjoyed many sports including basketball, baseball, soccer and football, but roller-skating and roller blades were his favorite.

During his early teenage years Josh developed an interest in music, and evolved into an accomplished musician on the guitar. By age fourteen, Joshua and fellow musicians were doing well, playing local festivals and coffee houses. Joshua also had a knack for automotive repair, and by age eighteen was a master mechanic. Joshua had the intellect and disposition to achieve any goal he sought. He always had smile on his face, a joke on the tip of his tongue and a helping hand to assist anyone he could. So when Joshua chose to serve his Nation, no one was surprised.

As with most people, there are a variety reasons we choose certain paths in life. This was also true with Joshua’s decision to serve in the Army. However, he made one statement that I’ll remember most. Josh truly believed that we as Americans were safer here because our troops were over there. His desire to join the Army as a medic, was based on his believe in our troops and his passion for looking after them.

Joshua was not only a good soldier; he was good at being a solider. His keen mind enabled him to be a great medic; his kind heart was reflected in the eyes of destitute people he was always helping and his strong physique and training made him a warrior. Joshua touched the hearts of people wherever he went. His sacrifice though tragic was not in vain.

As a solider and a man, Joshua made a difference in the lives of those he knew and worked with. As a medic he played a significant role in saving the live of a fellow solider who received a gunshot would to the head. While under enemy fire, Joshua removed the solider from harm’s way and preformed extraordinary life saving measures. Joshua was awarded the Army medal of Commendation with Valor for his actions that led to the survival of this solider. Joshua never really understood why he got a medal for doing his job. In a recent letter to family and friends Joshua said, “I just stay focused as platoon medic to make sure my soldiers are taken care of night and day. Sometimes it is a tiring job, but a job I have found great pride and satisfaction in performing.”

Joshua was truly a gift to us all, he loved life and people, he adored his wife Kristin, enjoyed his family and friends. He has left a big hole in our hearts and I will simply miss him every minute of my life. If it weren’t for all of the kind people such as you, I am not sure how we would have made it through the past two weeks.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

We are so very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

My sincere sympathy and deepest condolensces to the entire Harmon family. Josh was a great soldier, a great person, and will be deeply missed. We had the honor to serve with him over here in Iraq at the Air Force hospital. Josh routinely brought us patients and was always a pleasure to work with. He was full of life and had many bright things for his future. It was my honor to know him and be-friend him and I will never forget the feeling the day we found out about the accident. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers and know that Josh will be missed and he was a great blessing to all those he came into contact with.
