Judith Hale Obituary

JUDITH JOHNSON HALE Judith Lu Johnson Hale, beloved teacher, friend and spouse, died Tuesday, May 31, 2001, after a short illness. Judi was known for her compassion, independence and wit. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services. The daughter of Alfred and Mildred Johnson, Judi grew up in the small community of Chadron, Neb. in the 1940's. Her father was a staunch and educated railroad man and both her parents were pillars of the community. Judi never lost the common sense and practical outlook on life she gained from them. After graduating from Chadron High School in 1961, Judi attended Chadron State College. While there, Judi encountered the two things that would change her life forever - teaching and her soul mate, Ralph Dewey Hale Jr., a dashing senior classman with a wicked sense of humor. They were engaged in Judi's senior year and were wed on Jan. 22, 1965, the year Judi obtained her B.A. in English. Judi then joined Ralph as a teacher at Hyannis High School. In 1968, they loaded up a U-Haul trailer and headed to Las Vegas. Judi took a position teaching English and journalism at Edward W. Clark High School, where she taught for 27 years. During her leadership, Clark's newspaper and yearbook took top awards around the state and the southwest region. She was fiercely dedicated to professional journalism and demanded it of her students. News items were factual, unbiased and informational. Editorials could be thought-provoking, creative and controversial, but inflammatory, misleading innuendo was not allowed. Opinions were based on data and research, not rhetoric. After retiring from public service, Judi instilled these same values in another generation of students when she took a position as the publications advisor at the Meadows School, where she taught for five years. Her excellence and influence on students was recognized and honored by both the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Las Vegas Sun in May 2000. They said she was influential in encouraging students to embrace the honored profession of journalist - cultivating in them "high ideals and a love of writing." She was also awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Uptown Kiwanis for the program she began with the Paradise Senior Citizen's Club that pared journalism students and seniors. When Ralph died in 2004, Judi continued to pursue her hobbies of gardening, sewing and photography. She was also a treasured volunteer for the Clark County Library District and maintained friendships with a vast network of former students and teacher colleagues. Judi and Ralph had no children and no surviving relatives, so their colleagues and former students became their family as well as their friends. Just as we missed Ralph upon his passing, we will miss Judy dearly, but her legacy lives on in the lives of those she taught so well. A scholarship fund honoring them has been established at their alma mater, Chadron State College. Donations can be sent to Chadron State College Foundation, 1000 Main St., Chadron, NE 69337 for the Hale/Johnson/Driscoll Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Thinking of the top 10 non-family members that influenced me in my life, Mrs Hale comes to mind. She was my journalism teach at Clark. Her love and outreach to the girls in the class was beyond meaningful and a joy to watch. She truly cared for me and my classmates. What a wonderful ministry she had.

Judi and Ralph Hale came to Las Vegas the same year as my family and I. We were all Midwesterners and shared similar values. We, because we had a dog each, ended up in an apartment that would allow dogs, one right near Clark High School. Judi and I became close friends, teaching journalism, publications, and literature at different high schools, comparing notes and situations daily. We used to have some wicked Password sessions on Saturday nights after a shared dinner. We laughed, we played, we taught, and we stayed friends. Time has certainly taken its toll. I miss the Password (we wore out two games) and I miss my friends.

Today is Judi's birthday. I should be taking her out to lunch like every year. I am missing her. My only solace is that she is spending today with her beloved Ralph. Godspeed Judi Hale! You taught me a lot in 30 years of friendship and I will carry your memory with me always.

Oh, Mrs. Hale...you truly were a genuine, caring person who connected with teenagers as few teachers can do. I remember you so fondly and really missed you when you left Hyannis. God bless...Ronda Adam

I have only the fondest of memories of Judi and Ralph when they were teaching in Hyannis, Ne. They were teachers and friends and were great community supporters and advocates for the students and community. Judi and Dorothy Dunn were the two best teachers I ever had--as different as night and day--but tremendous role models. You will be missed by many, Mrs. Hale. Godspeed!

Such a sudden and profound loss. Judi was not only a long time colleague, but a cherished friend. She leaves behind a hole that cannot be filled. She will be missed by so many friends and former students. Thank you for being such an important part of my life.

Mrs. Hale -

The class of '76 was a long time ago, but you were my rock and inspiration to pursue journalism in all it's mediums. It was great to have you as my instructor and advisor - may God keep you close, and thank you!

Judi and I met at Cornhusker Girls State in 1960. We became friends and I went out to see her in Chadron while we were in college. We kept in touch, though there was less and less communication over the years. Nevertheless, I considered her my friend and she will be sorely missed.

Mrs. Hale was at the beginning of her career when she touched my life as yearbook advisor from 1969 to 1972. Her influence on me has been mulit-dimensional from being a mentor to being a friend and confidante. I will always think of her with gratitude and love. Nancy Feldman Maheras
