NYLA SUTHERLAND Nyla J. Sutherland (nee Pehrson), 75, passed away Dec. 30, 2016. She was born March 1, 1941, in Polk County, Neb., to Elmer and Margaret Pehrson of Osceola, Neb. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1958. Nyla met Thomas D. "Tom" Sutherland in college in Kearney, Neb., and they were married a year later, Jan. 23, 1961. Nyla worked at a variety of jobs over the years in Nebraska, including librarian and assistant in an insurance sales office. However, her favorite job was as an assistant in the food service at the University of Nebraska, where part of her duties was at the training table for the athletes. In that job, she met most of the football players and became a life-long football fan. She knew more college and NFL statistics than most people. Of course, her favorite team was the Huskers. In 1984, Tom and Nyla moved to Las Vegas, where she spent several years as an executive assistant in the banking industry. Upon retirement, she spent several years as a volunteer at Desert Springs Hospital, where she served on the executive board and also president of the auxiliary. Nyla was a voracious reader and retained almost everything she read. She loved crossword puzzles and answering questions on Jeopardy before the contestants could. Nyla was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Tom; sons, Scott of Osaka, Japan, and Shannon (Anne); grandchildren, Emily and Calvert James (C.J.) of Lincoln, Neb.; her brother, Richard Pehrson (Dianna) of Columbus, Neb.; brothers-in-law, Jim (Veleta), Terry (Sue), Jerry (Debbie) and Tim (Rhonda); along with many cousins, nieces and nephews and their respective families. Memorial service is pending in Osceola.
