Stewart Barquist Obituary

Stewart James "Stew" Barquist passed away Nov 27th, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Stew was born in Boulder City, NV, April 16th, 1949, the second son to Robert and Virginia. He grew up in Henderson, and graduated from Basic High School in 1968. He loved playing football and was a State Champion wrestler his senior year. After high school, he attended UNR for a semester or two, then returned to Henderson, married, and became a father.

Stew became a police officer with Metro in Las Vegas at age 21. Seven years later, he and his first wife, Sheliah, and their two children, Erik and Becky, moved to North Bend, OR . Stew worked for NBPD for 25+ years, retiring in 2003 as Sergeant Barquist. He loved living on the OR coast, and spent many happy days camping, driving four wheelers in the dunes and in the snow in the mountains, and hunting elk. For the last several years in Oregon, Stew and his second wife, Teri, were very active in caring for foster children, at one point being nominated as Foster Parents of the Year for the state. In addition to the many who came for a short time, Stew and Teri managed to adopt five children from Oregon, and two from Nevada. They also raised Teri's nephew from the age of four, and have guardianship of two grandchildren. Needless to say-never a dull moment in this busy household! After moving to Las Vegas in 2003, Stew continued to work: security at Station Casinos, at CCSD and finally, as a patrolman with UNLV police. He was medically retired in 2012.

Stew was preceded in death by his father, Robert; mother, Virginia Stevens Clark; and step-father, PT "Jack" Stevens. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Teri Lawrence-Barquist; children, Erik (Abby) Barquist of Chicago, IL; Rebecca Barquist (Richard) Sweet, of Eugene, OR; Erik McLavey; Makenna Lawrence; Zackary Lawrence-Barquist, 17; Elizabeth Lawrence-Barquist, 17; Olivia Lawrence-Barquist, 16; Kristopher Lawrence-Barquist, 15; Ayanna Lawrence-Barquist, 11; Sanae Lawrence-Barquist, 8,-all of Las Vegas, grandchildren: Lindsay Glines, Portland, OR; Kayla Lawrence, 4; Kaeleigh Lawrence, 1, of Las Vegas. Also surviving are his siblings: Robert (Colleen) Barquist, Mesquite, NV; David (Lisa) Scherer, Henderson; Patty Stevens (Jeff) Regan, Port Ludlow, WA; and Barbara (Rich) Young, Henderson. In addition he is survived by his mother -in-law, Barbara Lawrence, Las Vegas and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2019, 11:00 am, at Central Church, 1001 New Beginnings Dr , Henderson, NV, 89011,

I am so saddened by your loss. Stew was my training officer and landlord in North Bend. He was very patient and kind. He was very supportive of women police officers and became a good friend. I don't think I would have passed muster without his help. He would recite the Jabberwock and other Lewis Carroll poems while we were on stakeout. He leaves many fond memories. Bless you forever Stew.

Rest in peace. I remember him very well when I was Activities Director where he resided. I use to make sure he went on every outing he loved riding on the bus so, even the Maintenance Director would take Stuart for rides. Stuart would clap his hands to the music when we had entertainment non-stop till the show was over. He always had a big smile. Loved to watch the air planes. He will be missed.

Stewart was always a loving, sweet and funny father to our two children, Erik and Rebecca. He always was affectionate and playful. They were little mini-mes, and grew up to be adult mini-mes.

I fondly remember Stewart supporting our daughter, Rebecca's back as she pushed while giving birth to her daughter, Lindsay. Rebecca was so tired, and he was right in there helping her. It was heart warming to watch.

All who knew Stewart knew he loved sports. I watched many times as he watched our son, Erik, wrestling. He would be so focused that he would be twisting his body into every position that Erik was using with his opponent. You had to die laughing watching him. He was always so proud of Erik.

Anyone who knew him knew he kind and generous to his family, friends and colleagues. He left this planet a gentler place for being here. He will always be adored and missed.

For those who didn't know Stew, the obit says a lot. But aside from that he was truly a great man, an incredible athlete and a super cop.
God's speed, bud.

Stew was like a second father to me. I remember staying up late to listen to old records and singing along to Cat Stevens as Becky fell asleep. He had a trick he did where he would flip Becky and me (not at the same time!) over- we called it being turned inside out! When he showed up to school in his uniform it felt like a special holiday, he glowed with positivity and made all the kids feel like the most important people in the room. His sense of humor, care, and spirit are missed!
