Virginia Barry Obituary

VIRGINIA BARRY Virginia C. Barry, born Oct. 28, 1917, a lifetime resident of Webster, S.D. and a dual resident of Las Vegas, died Dec. 11, 2008, at Sunrise Hospital. Ironically she was reunited with her husband, Bill exactly 16 years to the day. She was 91 years young. Carol Virginia Love was the only child of Isaiah "Zed" Sherman and Grace Edith (Love) Coomes. She went to school in Webster and graduated from WHS in 1935. As a young lady she traveled the United States with a ladies magazine crew. She met her husband, Bill "William P. Barry", a member of the publishing business who later became a well known and highly respected casino executive in Las Vegas. They were married Nov. 24, 1945. In the fall of 1952, Virginia and her children moved back to Webster to help care for her father after the death of her mother. In Webster she was active with the Methodist Church and many community activities. Virginia was a wonderful pillar of support with husband Bill's fund-raising activities for the American Cancer Society. Virginia's generosity was welcomed by the many charities and organizations which she avidly supported throughout her lifetime. She was a very proud and private person and made it clear to her children that she wanted private services. The service is being held at Palm Chapel, Dec. 18, with Pastor John Hisel of the Webster United Methodist Church officiating. Her final resting place is with her husband at Palm Memorial Park, Eternity Mausoleum, Las Vegas. She is survived by her children, Kathryn Sannes of Webster, William "Bill" P. Barry Jr. and Mary of Las Vegas, and Nancy and Ken Lowden of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her two constant companions, Nicky and Holly, her Boston Terriers. Also surviving are "special daughter" Jan (Joe) Barraza of Las Vegas; and "lifetime friend" Phyllis Hanse, Webster. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and son-in-law, Roger Sannes. In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to plant a tree in Virginia's memory. These donations may be sent to the Day County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 615 Webster, SD 57274.
