Allan Evans Obituary

Kammersänger Allan Evans
March 11, 1941 - November 7, 2018
Mannheim, Germany- Bass Baritone Allan Evans, 77, died unexpectedly at his residence in Mannheim, Germany on November 7, 2018. A world renowned opera singer, Allan lived in Europe for the past 52 years. A move necessary for an African American male to take advantage of the opportunities afforded him. At an early age, Allan developed the love for music and singing, and under the tutelage of the late Aquilla J. Thompson and the late Bernice Ridley an unimagined musical career and journey emerged.
He was educated in the public schools of Bibb County; George Washington Carver Elementary and Ballard Hudson High school. Upon graduation, Allan attended Knoxville College in Knoxville Tennessee and Macalester College in St. Paul Minnesota. While at Macalester, Dewitt Wallace, the founder of Reader's Digest gave him an endowment to Juilliard School of Music in New York. After graduating from Juilliard in 1966, Allan's world renowned education and career as a classical bass baritone in operas catapulted as he traveled and resided in Europe. In 1996, he was awarded the title of Kammersänger which is the highest honor for artistic excellence bestowed by the German government.
Although Allan celebrated numerous career successes, he never forgot his roots. He always returned home during his off season, which just happened to be the summertime, to visit with family and friends; however, he didn't forget the Macon community. He freely shared his skills, abilities, and blessings through numerous concerts, workshops, etc. He was always interested in the artistic development of young people and as a result, established the Mildred O. Evans Scholarship Award in honor of his mother. For more than 10 years, he shared his talent as he performed numerous concerts and awarded scholarships. Many Macon youth were recipients of the scholarships and went on to further enhance their studies.
Allan's demise has broken the hearts of many, especially his family who will cherish his memories forever; A sister, Martha Evans Grant, Macon; Five brothers; Dr. Billy Joe Evans( Adye Bel), Ann Arbor, Michigan; Otha Evans, SR., Decatur; Jesse Evans, Terry Evans, and Jonathan Evans, all of Macon; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral and burial services will take place in Mannheim, Germany on November 27, 2018. Services entrusted to First Mannheim Bestattungs-Institute Buhn. A Memorial service will be held in Macon at Lundy Chapel Baptist Church, 1:00 p.m. December 8, 2018.

How grateful and honored I am to have met and spent time with this great, gifted giant of our Macon community. We are saddened not to be able to see him again and forever so proud of him. Hearing him sing live in concert at the Douglass Theatre sans microphone we witnessed the rare treasure of his voice...unforgettable.

Martha, Otha, and family,
I wish to express my sorrow for the recent loss of your brother and family member. I had the privilege of hearing Allan's great baritone voice here in Macon during the 1970s, and he was magnificent!
I am grateful for that, and I am grateful for you in my life.
May you find consolation through the unending grace of God and His love, which does not end here on Earth, but is with us forever.
