Andrew Coggins Obituary

Andrew M. Coggins Jr.
September 16, 1959 - May 14, 2023
Macon, Georgia -
Andrew (Andy) Murray Coggins, Jr., age 63, of Macon, Georgia passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023. Andrew was born on September 16, 1959 in Macon, Georgia to the late Andrew Murray Coggins, Sr., and Martha (Powell) Coggins.
Andy was a gifted Electronics Engineer with a passion for supporting the defense of the United States. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1981, he began his professional career as an Air Force civil servant, developing specialized software algorithms for Electronic Combat systems used to counter hostile anti-aircraft missiles and radar systems. He continued supporting the US Warfighters throughout his life spending over two decades working on the development of major weapon systems in support of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) aircraft and personnel. He was very proud to have been a part of the engineering team who performed the rapid development and fielding of the MC-130W Dragon Spear aircraft and the evolution of that weapon system into the AC-130W Stinger Gunship in support of combat operations in the Middle East. He culminated his career as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of defense contractor Sansara LLC.
He was actively involved with making his neighborhood a better place and he never turned anyone away that needed help. Having no children of his own, he was a proud uncle who encouraged and saw that his nieces had the opportunity to further their education by fully funding their college experiences. Andy is preceded in death by his above mentioned parents; and his sister, Christie Ann Coggins. He leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law; Carol and Ray Johnson; nieces; Elizabeth, Ashleigh Rae and Anna Kathryn. He also leaves a lot of friends and extended family as well.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 3rd, 2023 at 11 AM at Houston Heights Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in his memory to Houston Heights Baptist Church at 4439 Tech Drive, Macon, GA 31206.

I had the good fortune of meeting Andy in 2006 and remained friends with him. Andy was one of the most giving people I have ever met - he was always willing to lend a hand and was always looking out for others. He will be missed.

I was blessed with having the opportunity to know and work with Andy during most of my seventeen years working with MTC Technologies. Not only was Andy one of the most outstanding engineers, thinkers, and dedicated teammates I have known, he was one of the best men I have known. He will be missed and remembered by many of those who knew him. Jim Clark

I´m am so saddened to lose my cousin, Andy Coggins, way too soon. I pray God welcomes Andy home and comforts Carol Coggins and his extended family and friends.

Andy was certainly a charitable guy for as long as I can recall. For example, he and his family visited us in Texas in the late 1970s or early 1970s during my baseball card days. He stayed up all night helping me sort thousands of baseball cards by the numbers on the back of the cards. I would by cases of cards from the manufacturers who would send the cards in random order. Can you imagine how boring it was to sort 700 cards per set, especially if you were just helping you kid cousin? But he did with his ever-present smile.

Decades later, and after hours of conversation about my new career, Andy offered to write a letter of recommendation for a me. And he also timely wrote it very eloquently.

Like his sister Chris, and our cousins Danny Handley and Cathy Bradley, he left us way too soon.

R.I.P. cuz!

Thanks to Niel, he introduced me to Andy over 20 years ago.. very smart guy, he showed me how to network and build computers, he always had a project going on and always helping someone. Andy helped me out when I changed careers back in 2008 letting me help with his projects around his house, I would say I was one of the ones that Andy helped. Andy and I would build computers together every couple of years as we were about to build this summer. He will be missed dearly!!
