Charles Jones Obituary

Charles Hubert "Charlie" Jones -MACON - Charles Hubert "Charlie" Jones, 82, died on September 25, 2009 following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM, Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Chip Miller officiating. Burial will be private. -Mr. Jones was born in Upson County and was the son of the late Benjamin Hill Jones and Jewell Beckham Jones. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Jones Hay and brother Benjamin Hill Jones Jr. Mr. Jones graduated from R.E. Lee Institute in Thomaston, GA, as Commander of the Corps of Cadets. Thereafter, he entered service in the US Navy and upon discharge, attended the University of Georgia where he was a president of Demosthenian Literary Society; member of Gridiron Secret Society; member of Blue Key National Honor Society and member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. After earning his BBA, Mr. Jones spent a brief time in Atlanta with the Governor's office before moving to Macon, GA. -Founder, Chairman and CEO of Ocmulgee Fields, Inc., Mr. Jones served as an advocate for education and community involvement not only in Middle Georgia, but also across the entire state. -Mr. Jones' private service includes directorships for C&S National Bank and Family Federal Savings and Loan Association. -Mr. Jones had many public interests. His most recent was a seven-year term as a member at large of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. -Mr. Jones was the first chairman of the Macon/Bibb County Hospital Authority; Vice Chairman of the Macon Hospital Commission; Chairman of the Macon/Bibb County Industrial Authority; Medical College of Georgia Health Inc. and member of the Development Authority of Bibb County. -He was an advocate for many civic organizations, including President of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of "Return of the Creek Indians" Commission; Chairman of the Medical School Task Force; President of the Board of Directors - Ocmulgee National Monument; President of Timmy Turtle Nursery for Mentally Handicapped Children; Chairman of the Development Council Medical Center Foundation of Central Georgia; Co-Founder of New Town Macon and President of the Macon Lions Club. -Mr. Jones was a Trustee of Mercer University, member of the Executive Committee and first Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Medical College of Mercer University; Board of Visitors - Presbyterian College and Life Member of the President's Club of Mercer University. -Since 1985, Mr. Jones has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Prior to that time, he was a founding member and Chairman of the Building Committee of Northminster Presbyterian Church. He was a Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church and Moderator of the Augusta-Macon Presbytery. -Mr. Jones was a long-term member of Idle Hour Country Club and the Saint Vincent Society in Macon, France. -Throughout his life, Mr. Jones has been recognized in many ways, including as an honorary member and honorary Chief of the Muskogee Creek Indian Nation; "NAACP Man of the Year of Race Relations" (1972); Dr. Rufus Harris Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award (1973); Honorary Associate of Arts Degree - Gordon College (1995); Doctor of Humanities Degree - Medical College of Mercer University (1997); Museum of Arts and Sciences Benefactor Award (1998); Carolyn Clayton Award - Cherry Blossom Festival (2006) and Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award (2008). -Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Ves Childs Jones; daughter, Jan Jones Ward (Paul); sons, Charles Jefferson Jones (Tammy); Dwight Charles Jones (Tracy) of Macon, GA; sisters, Betty Dawkins and Jacqueline Williams of Thomaston, GA; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of other friends and relatives. -In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Georgia 277 Martin Luther King Blvd. Macon GA 31201; Macon State College Foundation 100 College Station Rd. I had the great honor of working with Mr. Jones for several years and remember with great fondness the brilliance of his mind and depth of his character.
