Clay was our band leader and driver for the Chestnut Hill Boys band when we were graduate students at Purdue University in the late 1960's. Wonderful memories.

My apologies for so tardily noting Clayton's passing, and my condolences to Carol. I never went to many symposia, so my one meeting with Clayton was circa 1981, when he traveled to General Dynamics in San Diego to look at the shielding effectiveness work we were doing on the Tomahawk, using a reverberant chamber. I was impressed at how Clayton was interested in all the details, and how easy he was to talk with. Strange how some people project a positive aura; just one day yet I can vividly remember walking the facility and talking about our progress & problems with him. Despite never again meeting him, I followed his presentations and bought his "Introduction..." book. In a field where it's tempting to be opinionated, Clayton found the better path!

I recall my meet with Prof Clayton in 1990 at IEEE-EMC symposium. He was founding IEEE-EMC Education programme and as a member whatever suggestions made by me he accpeted and appreciated. Well informed teacher and great EMC engineer. I pray for his soul rest in peace

I worked with Clayton as a contractor while he was a RADC in the 70s on an EMC effort. Clayton always had a smile on his face and getting the effort technically correct was always his goal. Although I had no other contacts with Clayton, except one phone call while he was cancer stricken, he was one of the top experts in the EMC community. His achievements are well recognized. Technology is missing one of the good ones.

I just read of Clayton's passing in the Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine. Clayton taught my first EE course at Tech in 1966. He was the most influential instructor I ever had, setting me on the right path for a successful engineering career. I owe Clayton more than can be expressed in words. Ironically, I recently thought of him and vowed to locate him and write to say thanks for the extreme impact he had on my life. Just goes to show things shouldn't be put off too long. Please accept my thanks on Clayton's behalf.

Dr. Paul was my advisor while I was a student at the University of Kentucky. He encouraged me to stick with engineering at one point when I was struggling with my future career path. I've been in the engineering field for over 20 years now and I love my job. It wouldn't have happend had Dr. Paul not encourged me those many years ago. I will always be thankful for that.

I have only met Dr. Paul twice. On one of those occasions I had purchased one of his books and he signed it for me. Clayton would not be able to pick me out of a police line-up so I could not say I was even an acquaintance. But because of the work he has done in EMC I am able to do my job better. He will be remembered a long time in the academic and engineering circles which he walked.

I am very fortunate to be introduced to Dr. Paul in 2002. Over the years I and my colleagues at Panasonic EMC lab had attended all his seminars at Atlanta area. It is Dr. Paul's super star quality that revived the local IEEE EMC chapter ! What amazes me is the immense positive energy radiating from him: his passion for education and compassion toward every one around him are manifesto of a great soul. Like other great man before him, he has made a dent to the universe.

Hi Carol,
I don't think we ever met but I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to Clayton via you.
I knew of him, but then got to know him at the Detroit Symposium. He was teaching a section on Pspice and I had never used it before. I took the EMC University program specifically for Clayton's class.
Some people questioned why I was taking a class on EMC after working in it for more than 40 years and even teaching class on EMC design. Well you are never too old to learn something new. It makes life enjoyable to find a new challenge.
Wow, he understood it and was able to communicate his understanding quite well. I continued to get more involved with it after the class.
I got myself in trouble several times and contacted Clayton and he made it clear that he was available to help me as I worked to learn the software. Later I added what I learned to my class explaining filter design.
He was a great help and will long be remembered as a wonderful teacher.
Peace and love.

I first met Clayton at my first IEEE EMC Symposium which I think was in 1987 in Atlanta. What I first noticed was that he was a giant among men. Over the years I valued his counsel and most of all friendship. Clayton was an engineer, scholar, teacher, musician and humanitarian embodied in the true southern gentlemen that he was.

Clayton and I were good friends that met in our IEEE EMC Society activity. It turns out that we probably passed each other on Purdue's campus as we both attended the University. So I missed the opportunity to know him earlier. He was a true gentleman as well as a scholar that contributed to our electromagnetic compatibilty discipline. I still remember his holding a pipe as he conversed with anyone that wanted to hang out with him. In his recent time, we exchanged thoughts about our situations with my wife dying just 3 years ago. I think it was comforting. Carol knew of the situation almost 2 years ago. I know she will be strong and will miss Clayton as much as I miss my Lois. I continue to offer her my condolences but realize that all of us know that Clayton was an icon in our discipline. She can take solace in that.

I knew Clay in his 20's in Indiana and knew him only in connection with his musical talent and interests. (I never even saw him change a light bulb, much less write a text book on electrical engineering.) We were having fun then and never thought about any of it finding its way into our obituaries.
I met Clay in early April, 1966 and I last saw him when we were both bearers at the funeral of fiddler Bob Anderson at the end of June, 1971.
Clay was the leader and organizer, guitar player and vocalist for our bluegrass band. I had no car. Clay picked me up for practice and gigs as well as trips to concerts where we were just listeners. He was the only one of us to actually express the universal fantasy of young musicians to "go on the road" for a while. We never did, but with the Anderson square dance band, we did make, and sell, an album.

Over the past ten years or so, Clayton would bring his EMC classes from Mercer on field trips to our EMC lab in Atlanta. The students would spend the day "hands-on" in EMC and Clayton stressed what that meant for them. Of all the many and various accomplishments of Dr. Paul, I think he enjoyed most the giving back. The way his face lit up, and that huge smile in knowing what he was doing for his students; it was obvious. His excitement was clear in seeing that his students were "getting it" in the real world. Clayton was a huge asset to the EMC community who will be dearly missed.

During early stage of my career some 20 plus years ago, I found his book “Introduction to EMC” has a good balance of both theoretical and practical coverage. It has been the recommended text for all postgraduate EE students who are taking my EMC course as a technical elective. His knowledge will continue to benefit many young EMC engineers. I first met Clayton in 2007 as one of the speakers for the inaugural Global EMC University lectures at the IEEE International EMC Symposium in 2007. During my interaction with him either through email or in person, I could feel his passion in education and his sincerity in sharing his experience. Despite his deteriorating health condition, he continues to share his insight and knowledge with the EMC community through papers in IEEE EMC Magazine. His last paper “A Serious Problem in Using the Jarvis Model for the Prediction of Crosstalk” was written and submitted to me just a few months before his passing. He will be missed by the EMC community in Singapore.
Dear Carol, please accept our deepest condolence. My prayers to you and your family.

Carol, I first met Clayton in 1983 at EMC Zurich. He was a tremendous force in the EMC community and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His way of explaining concepts was unique and we are all richer for having known him and poorer for his loss. You are in the thoughts and prayers of all who knew him.

We have lost a dear friend, colleague, educator, and major contributor to his beloved EMC discipline. He has impacted an uncountable number of students that he taught and most importantly us. There is a vacuum now with little chance of that being filled. My sincere condolences to Carol who suffered along with Clayton as his medical condition deteriorated. She was by his side and I am sure that was more than comforting to the both of them. I know that Carol will make it through this and know that we are with her as needed. But the solace comes from knowing what Clayton did and was, including my rememberance of our chats with that pipe hanging from his mouth and the photo he sent me a while back which is attached here.

To Carol and all of Clayton family, I'm truely sadden by the loss Clayton. You and your family will be remembered in my prayers. I only knew Clayton for about 10 years through his work in EMC and Circuit analysis, but what a time, thank you. Clayton would listen to some wild idea and opions, but no matter how right or wrong, he was always level headed and even hand. I only wish I had been a menitor of Clayton when I was in school, but he alway helped and guide me when every I asked him. Again, thank you, and my prayers go out to you and your family for your loss.

Carol, I am very sorry for your loss. Even knowing it was coming does not make it any easier when it happens. Clayton was an outstanding engineer and human being. He will be missed on both a personal and processional level!

I was very fortunate to have met Dr. Clayton Paul, one of the greatest human beings of my life.
His ability to simplify and explain complex electromagnetic problems can not be found in today's world. His kindness and generosity, his books and papers to remain for mankind for generations ahead. Those who met him will feel extreme loss and sadness, those who will get to learn through his books will admire a great mind.
God bless you Clayton. I am unable to find words to express my condolences to his wife and family.

I was one of Dr. Paul's grad students at the University of Kentucky. He had a significant impact on my academic performance and career. Out of Dr. Paul's many sayings, there is one I remember quite fondly, “a person with an IQ of one above a rock should be able to understand this,” to which I thought, “he must know some fairly smart rocks.” He made learning an enjoyable pursuit. His positive influence will carry on through everyone who knew him.

Carol, I am saddened to hear of Clayton's passing. We were classmates at The Citadel. After graduation, we roomed together in Aiken, SC when we worked for DuPont. Although time and distance kept us apart over the years, I hold his memory dear to my heart.
