Irene Claxton Obituary

Irene R. Claxton
June 17, 1922 - November 16, 2013
Dublin, GA- Funeral services for Miss Irene R. Claxton will be held at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013.
Miss Claxton, 91, the daughter of the late Dr. E. B. Claxton and Irene Robertson Claxton, died on November 16, 2013. She was predeceased by a brother, E. B. Claxton, Jr., and two sisters, Mrs. Iris Claxton Eubanks and Mrs. Ellen Claxton Bell.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. E. B. Claxton, Jr.; a niece, Mrs. Scott Bourassa; three nephews, E. B. Claxton, III, John A. Bell, III, and Dr. A. Benjamin Eubanks, Jr.; nine great-nieces, Caroline and Chappell Claxton, Georgia Claire, Katie Bell, Abigail, and Anna Scott Bourassa, Ellen Marie Bell, Meredith Eubanks Huot de Saint-Albin and Waverley Wren Eubanks; and a great-nephew, John A. Bell, IV; cousins, Mrs. Nannette Woodard, Mrs. Betty Nell Parker, Mrs. Caroline Bell, Mrs. Helen Fordham and Mrs. Jean Bennett; other relatives, and many friends.
A native of Dublin, she was a graduate of Dublin High School and attended Wesleyan Conservatory and Northwestern University. She also studied at a photography school in Santa Barbara, California. She combined her love of photography and world traveling to execute a veritable treasure trove of historic and esthetic pictures, developing the film in her studio behind her home, always referring to it as her "dark room." Her pictures were exhibited in art shows, where she was awarded prizes for her brilliant photography. Many of her pictures are on display locally, including a complete wall display in the Heritage Room of the Laurens County Library. Always gladly sharing her expertise with others, she was a mentor to many other photographers.
Though deaf from infancy, the result of a tragic illness, she fully participated in many activities, including the Dublin Cotillion Club, the Ladies Golf Association, John Laurens Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the Laurens County Historical Society, and the Dublin Association of Fine Arts. She was a long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church and had been baptised in the River Jordan. One of her favorite activities was entertaining her friends at the Claxton cabin at Well Spring.
The family will greet friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and suggest that in lieu of flowers, friends give memorials to Serenity Hospice or their special charities. They are grateful for the prayers and other evidences of concern in these last days and are especially thankful for the love and loyalty of Lesa Amerson.

I knew Ms Irene. I first met her around 1986 at the Chamber of Commerce where I worked. She noticed me taking pictures. We shared a love of photography and animals. My great aunt was also deaf and I learned sign language as a child. I could talk with her in sign, but she also read lips pretty darn good.
I visited her many times at her home on Bellevue. I even got to visit her dark room. She was an awesome photographer.
Years later, I worked at the Dublin Animal Hospital with Drs Kennedy, Cobb and Lord. Dr. Cobb became Ms Irene's champion as just about every week, she would bring in cats to him to be spayed or neutered. He was so sweet to her.I knew Ms Irene. No matter where I ran into her in Dublin, I was always greeted with a hello and hug. I wished that I had known of her passing. I would have come to honor my friend.
She was also a member of the church that we attended.
