Jacqueline "Jackie" Burgess Barnes
Fort Valley, Ga- Jacqueline "Jackie" Burgess Barnes, 82, died Sunday, June 4, 2017. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Fort Valley United Methodist Church, 301 West Church Street in Fort Valley, with Rev. Doug May and Rev. James Hamlin officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 9:30AM until service time on Thursday in the Fellowship Hall of Fort Valley United Methodist Church.
  Born in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Otis Clay Burgess and Mingnon Brunson Burgess, Mrs. Barnes married Fletcher Hargett Barnes, her husband of 60 years, on June 14, 1954. She began her work in the medical field in Atlanta while working for a cardiologist and urologist before she moved to Fort Valley in 1970. She decided to go back to school, earning her associate degree in nursing from Macon Junior College in 1977. She then began her career at Peach County Hospital and stayed there until her retirement as the director of nursing in 1998. After retiring, Mrs. Barnes assumed the role of president of Valley Cable TV and served with the Medical Center of Peach County Hospital Auxillary, acting as treasurer for four years. She played the clarinet and performed in the Middle Georgia Concert Band along with her husband. She was a member of Fort Valley United Methodist Church, the Upper Room Sunday School Class, and sang in the choir.
  Survivors include her children, James Fletcher "Jimmy" Barnes of Fort Valley, Ellen Barnes Sappington of Macon, and Robert Brunson "Bobby" Barnes of Fort Valley; a grandson, Daniel Hargett Barnes of Atlanta; and a sister, Catherine Phares (Howard) of Raliegh, North Carolina. She is preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Fletcher Hargett Barnes.
  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fort Valley United Methodist Church, 301 West Church St., Fort Valley, GA 31030. Rooks Funeral Home in Fort Valley is in charge of arrangements.
