Jerry Joyner Obituary
Jerry Joyner
March 5, 1936 - July 4, 2021
Houston, Texas - Jerry Wade Joyner, age 85, loving husband, father, brother and grandfather was welcomed into the arms of his Savior, surrounded by his loving children.
An avid golfer and gardener, he lived a full life centered on family, enriched by friends and fulfilled by generosity to others. Jerry was born in Fulton, Kentucky to Walter and Wilma Joyner and big sister Joan. His family moved to Macon, Georgia where he graduated from Lanier High School in 1954. He began college at Emory University then transferred to Mercer University where he was the captain of the golf team and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He enlisted into the army and enrolled in the Officer Candidate School. Upon returning to Macon, he courted Patricia Summey, who was a senior at Wesleyan University. Pat and Jerry married on July 15, 1961.
Jerry and Pat had three children; Kimberly, Jerry Wade Jr., and Leslie. He spent weekends coaching all his children in their favorite sports. Jerry had a lifelong passion for golf and at every golf club he joined, he was recognized as a club champion. Jerry worked for Wyeth-Ayerst (Pfizer) where he retired as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He loved planting antique roses and joined a rose society in each city he lived in, eventually becoming the president of the Central Florida Heritage Rose Society.
For 60 years, he supported and loved his wife and family. He worked hard - moving numerous times... Dallas, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Charleston and Weeki Wachee were historical cities to explore and places they called home. Jerry was known as "Poppy" to his grandkids and enjoyed many activities with them such as ping pong, dominos, and giving them golf lessons. He also enjoyed traveling and supporting each grandchild in their personal pursuits such as baseball, volleyball, and Odyssey of the Mind. He would forge a flood and drive through ice to be there for those he loved.
In 2012, his wife Pat was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor and given 6-9 months to live. Jerry made it his mission to help Pat live to the fullest in her remaining time. Jerry spent 6 years loving and caring for his wife staying beside her until she died in January of 2018.
Jerry is survived by his three children; Kim (Paul) Stehr, Jerry Wade (Ashley) Joyner and Leslie (David) Langley; six grandchildren; Lexi (Jordan) Michael, Connor (Kenna) Stehr, Cameron Joyner, Caroline Langley, Brooks Langley and Jackson Langley and one great-grandchild, Patterson Michael.
A private service will be held for family members.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Rose Society.
