Fort Valley State has lost one of it's finest, coolest, sweetest and most compassionate staff ever. Coach stood out as a "Giant" in a field of young teenaged girls and boys, eager to learn...HISTORY... He did not disappoint. Whatever, any of his students, players or peers needed, Coach would be the "go to guy"..to get the job done. FVSC Wildcat for life!!!!!!
RIP DR. JOHN LEWIS RHODES, SR.

Having known Dr. Rhodes during my employment at FVSU I found him to be very kind. At times I would need a ride to Macon and he would provide such if his schedule allowed. During these few times he would note on how he could sing and how much he loved his being in the choir at New Pleasant Grove...Along with other positions there. Rest in Peace and condolences to his family during the loss of your loved one. Another soldier called home....

To the family of Coach Rhodes, my College Dad and the man who helped push me to where I am in life today, I would like to say "Thank You". Thank you to his wife and kids for sharing him with me for the most important years of my life at Fort Valley State University. Thanks to Coach Rhodes, I majored in History and was the only female in the program. I worked in his office as his Student Assistant and he guided my love for History. I followed in his footsteps and became a teacher only to be blessed to move to the territory of Guam. I wish that I could pay my last respects on Wednesday, but I will not be able to make it. My prayers are with you all, but nothing that Coach Rhodes did was ever in vain. He instilled greatness in everyone that he had the pleasure of meeting and educating. I will never forget Coach Rhodes and he will always have a place in my heart and my career. It is well and although he is no longer with us, may his spirit of "being educated and know what you talk about when you speak" forever live in us.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Rhodes transition. My condolences to his wife, children, and extended family. Dr. Rhodes was my history teacher in 1969 in West Helena, AR. He instilled in me a passion for our history. He taught me to search for the truth beyond the "available books" when researching Black History. I will forever appreciate the self-pride he taught us, the poor, Black children of the Delta. He inspired us to do more and to be the best at whatever our chosen profession. Thank you, Dr. Rhodes. Your legacy will be passed on.
