Libby Byus Obituary
April 27,1943 - December 20, 2017
Augusta, GA- Mrs. Elizabeth "Libby" Byus, 74, entered into rest Wednesday, December 20, 2017.
Libby was a revered Richmond County educator. She spent the majority of her career at Westside High School where she taught physics and chemistry and was later an assistant principal. She also taught at Tutt Junior High, and was an administrator at both Josey and A.R. Johnson.
Always a competitor, her boys' golf team at Tutt was undefeated during her years as coach. More impressively, her Westside physics team never lost a state title and the individuals on each team swept the top five places in the state every year.
She will best be remembered for her three great loves and one consuming passion. Her loves: her children and grandchildren, the game of golf, and her beloved Georgia Bulldogs. Her passion: progressive politics fueled by her liberal bleeding heart. She would always joyfully and enthusiastically engage in conversation or heated debate on any of the topics above. Her sharp intellect and biting wit always ensured an enjoyable and memorable exchange. While she could certainly be headstrong she was also very loyal. Once you became her student, her friend, or her coworker; she was always on your team and you could always count on her.
Libby graduated from the University of Georgia Magna Cum Laude in 1965 and was Valedictorian at Warner Robins High School in 1961. At UGA she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega among numerous other organizations. She also held memberships over the years at West Lake Country Club and Mount Vintage Golf Club.
To all of her former students: thank you. No matter what you got from her, she received back so much more from all of you. Her reward was seeing you all meet or exceed your potential both professionally and personally.
Family members include her son: Harry F. "Trey" Byus, III (Susan) of Athens, GA; daughter: Kelly Byus Campbell (Mark) of Charleston, SC; and grandchildren: Harry F. "Drew" Byus, IV, Anna Katherine "Kitty" Campbell, and McCoy Andrew Campbell. The family would also like to thank Kerri Burriss for acting as Libby's caretaker over the past year. Kerri made a huge difference in Libby's life.
A memorial service will be Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 P.M.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chum Balk, Bobby Wright, Al Wall, Robert Alexander, Tom Horner, Ronnie Melcher, David Banks, Phillip Hodges, and Mark Brucker.
In lieu of flowers, Libby's wishes are that a donation be made to one of her most cherished charities: the Humane Society, Planned Parenthood, or the University of Georgia Foundation.

Mrs. Byus, you will forever hold a dear and much loved place in my heart. You were my favorite teacher and taught such that you made Physics absolutely wonderful. You started my love of Einstein. I wish I could have told you just what a difference you made in my life and how much I love you but as you are now playing golf in the prime of your amazing life with all of the greats I think and so hope you know dear and special lady. And I so wish I had known just how much we had in common on a personal level at the time I was your student. It only makes me respect you more! Much love and peace forever.

Many condolences for her friends and the family she adored.
She was my Westside High School homeroom teacher for 4 years and my amazing Physics teacher for two. I still adore physics because of her. I just finished a wonderful book about Einstein that I most likely wouldn't have dreamt of picking up had it not been for her in the late 1980's. Simply a beautiful teacher of life in all ways. No one will ever come close to her example. May this candle burn eternallly just as her soul is gracing another world with it's brilliant light.

I met Libby about 15 years ago when she called my office with a tax question. She was a really neat person to know. I loved her sense of humor and wit. So sorry to lose her

To the family and all her numerous friends, I say, "How we were blessed by her intellect, her love of her precious pets, and her everlasting teaching skills, as evidenced by the outstanding students who she gladly shared her knowledge. Mrs. Byus "officially" taught many of us chemistry or physics, but she also provided life lessons to students who came through her class. I loved her sense of humor, her passion for the University of Georgia, and her willingness to speak her mind. She is a treasure that the extended Westside family will miss. Libby was my best friend and she left me so much more than just her friendship. I am so incredibly thankful and blessed that I was able to be with her in her final days. She taught me that giving up was not an option. She showed me how to become a stronger woman and that I deserved so much more in life. I will never forget our laughs and listening to Gladys Knight and the Pips and her sharing with me so many stories about her life. I am honored that she hired me to care for her and I will NEVER FORGET Elizabeth Kelly Byus! She loved her family, friends and especially, her furry friend, Mr. Bossy. Every time we were in public, she was always telling friends or even complete strangers about how proud she was of Trey and Kelly and their accomplishments. She also loved being a grandmother as well, (a.k.a. Grandma Ghost)! When she spoke of her grandkids, Drew, Kitty, and McCoy, her face would sparkle and you could see how proud she was of them and how must love and joy they brought to her life. Libby will definitely be missed, but never be forgotten. She was one of a kind and her legacy wilI continue for many years to come! May you Rest In Peace Libby! I will love you forever!
