Sparky was the finest person, friend and teammate anyone could ask for. Regardless of what life dealt him he put others first; time spent with Sparky - in person or by phone - always left the other person feeling better. He made a Georgia football fan out of me and I plan to root for the Dawgs the rest of the way. Thanks, Sparky, for our friendship.

Well remember Sparky in school as a terrific guy with a great wry sense of humor, and as an extraordinary athlete. To me it doesn't get any better that that. He'll sure be missed.

Indeed, Sunday, 12/16/2018 was a terrible day for those of us who grew up on Waverland Drive. I am honored to have known both Sparky and Joan as children and as adults. They will be missed. My condolences to the families of both Sparky and Joan.

Sunday, 12/16/18 was a tough day for those of us who grew up in the Shirley Hills section of Macon. Sparky Sparks and Joan Elder (Woodford) were among that group. They lived within a half mile of each other on the same street. (Waverland Dr)
It is easy for me to go back there in my mind and remember the 50's and 60's, living in what surely must have been the best place in America to be a child. We played "touch" and "tackle" football in the Eubanks' front yard, rode "Flexies" and bikes down the hills and carried them or pushed them up the other side. We played games of "hide 'n go seek" and "kick-the-can" in the Ridley's yard and driveway, saw "Sputnik" cross our sky in 1957, shot fireworks every 4th of July, played "soldier," and constructed "hideouts" in our woods. We attended Alexander III, and to boot, had easy access to Baconsfield Park and later, the "Frat Field." We were free as birds, without a fear in the world.
Now, most of our parents and some of us, ourselves, have gone on into eternity. Soon, those of us who remember Mrs Rittenberry and her little "house" at the park, when some of our streets were still dirt, and before there was a Highland Hills Baptist Church will pass on too.
Unusual that two would leave the same day.
