Richard Roughton Obituary
July 4, 1924 - August 6, 2014
Perry, GA- Richard Wells "Dick" Roughton, 90, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, after an extended illness. Friends are invited to come visit with the family on Saturday, August 9, 2014, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to Heart of Georgia Hospice, 1120 Morningside Drive, Perry, Georgia 31069.
Dick was born in Houston County to the late Rawlings and Eunice Wells Roughton. Upon graduation from Perry High School, he attended Middle Georgia College then went to the Marine Academy in New York City. He joined the Merchant Marines and proudly served our country in World War II. Later, he was drafted to the U. S. Army and proudly served our country in the Korean War. After his service time was over, Dick spent his life in the construction business. A prominent business man in Houston County, he built many homes in Perry, including many of the ones located on Duncan Avenue, and several motels which are no longer in existence, including the Swan Motel, the Bel Aire Motel (in front of the present Ace Hardware), Capri Motel and Restaurant (across from Ag Center near Perry Chamber of Commerce), and the Heart of Georgia Motel (where Bank of Perry is now). He always said he wanted to leave Perry "better than when he found it." Once the Westfield School was started, Dick enjoyed washing the football uniforms every Saturday at one of the motels. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eunice Covington; and his brothers, Raleigh Roughton, D.K. "Dot" Roughton, George Roughton, and Billy Roughton; and his first wife, Alice Tucker Roughton. He was a Methodist.
Left to cherish the memories of Dick are his loving wife, who had been with him 32 years, Jean Roughton of Perry; his daughter, Connie Tucker Blum of Perry; his son, Ricky Robinson (Angie) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
