Samuel Connally Obituary

Samuel R. Connally -MACON - Samuel R. Connally, Ph.D., 67, died Saturday, May 24 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia after a ten year battle with cancer. Services will be held at 2P.M. Wednesday, May 28th at Christ Episcopal Church in Macon. The Reverends Bob Gibson and David Probst of Christ Church will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Cloister Room at Christ Episcopal Church following the service. -Dr. Connally was born in Rossville, GA. He was the son of the late Elmer Mullis Connally and the late Ella (Boyd) Connally, both of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from Brainerd High School in Chattanooga, TN. He originally attended the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga and then served for four years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and Hull University in the north of England where he earned his Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Psychophysiology. He then went on to teach and conduct research in Hull University. Dr. Connally was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Mercer University School of Medicine. He also served as the Director of Surgical Education for the Department of Surgery of the Medical Center of Central Georgia. -Dr. Connally is survived by his wife, Dr. Gena Connally; and sons, Quinn Connally of Virginia Beach, VA and Rowan Connally of Macon, GA. -In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the library of the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon at 1550 College Street, Macon, GA 31207-0001 (478-301-4056). -Hart's Mortuary and Crematory has charge of arrangements.

Sam was a dear learned friend when I was at the University of Tennessee in the late 1960's and early 1970's. He was a man of great humor, wisdom and perspective of his times. I am saddened by his loss and express deep sympathies to his family.
