William Rader Obituary

William E. Rader, 54, of Wausau, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at home.

Originally from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Bill was born Sept. 1, 1957, in Marquette, Mich., to the late Harry and Phyllis (Lind) Rader. He was a 1978 graduate of Ishpeming High School. Bill married Tamara (Tammy) Vercoe on Oct. 15, 1983.

Bill was employed as an iron ore miner at the Mather B. Mine from 1976 to 1979, and later at the Tilden and Empire Mines from 1979 to 1982. He went on to work at NMW Supply in Marquette. During this time Bill also worked with the United States Snowmobile Association as a technical inspector at races.

Bill pursued his passion of racing with his career, and was employed at Bombardier (Ski-Doo) as race coordinator in Wausau from 1995 to 2000. Between 2000 and 2009 he was employed at Polaris Racing as race coordinator in Rothschild. His career in racing took him throughout the United States and Canada where he met many great friends whom he considered to be his family.

Bill had many passions in life including snowmobile and car racing. He loved restoring old snowmobiles and muscle cars. He was always willing and excited to teach people about these and other things he was passionate about.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his wife and daughter, Dana. Bill and his daughter would work in the garage, hunt and 4-wheel together, and she and Tammy attended many races with him.

Bill loved to brook trout fish, hunt, and spend time in the woods. He loved the times he spent with his brother bird hunting and 4-wheeling in Michigan, and getting together with family and friends.

Bill's health problems never affected his positive outlook on life and his drive to do things he enjoyed. He was a genuinely good person who "told it like it was;" and his sense of humor was priceless. He will be greatly missed by everyone, especially "his girls."

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Rader of Wausau; daughter, Dana Rader of Wausau; and brother, John (M. Susan) Rader of Ishpeming; one aunt, and many cousins and nephews.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Saint Andrew Lutheran Church, 3200 N. Mountain Road, Wausau. The Rev. Craig Swenson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brainard Funeral Home, 5712 Memorial Court, Weston, and again from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family will be directed to a mechanical scholarship which will be set up at Wausau West High School at a later date.

Burial will take place in Ishpeming, Mich.

Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau, is assisting the family.

It is with saddened that I received the news of Bill passing. Bill was an inspiration for me when I started my career at BRP. I will always remember when I first visited Wausau, he took care of me like if we knew each other for ever. He was generous, patient and shared his knowledge with anyone even with young non experimented "Graineux" (Bill knows what I am talking about) like I was at that time.

All my thought and prayers goes to Bill family, he will always remain in my hearts.
Rest in peace my friend.

Tammy and Dana:

I am so sorry to hear about Bill's passing, but I am happy that he is no longer in pain. I hope you know what an impact he made on so many people.

Bill and I worked together at Ski-Doo from 1995 to 2000 when I led race marketing and we did some great things and traveled all over North America together - from Eagle River to Epping, NH to Fairbanks, AK and 100 towns in between.

We spent dozens of weekends every year at the sweaty Haydays and on the ice and snow of Brainerd. While I sipped coffee with reporters in a lodge, Bill wrenched away in subfreezing temperatures, with skinned knuckles in his grease-stained factory racing jacket, sometimes for 18 hours a day. Yet he'd often look at me wearily back in the hotel lobby and said "Boy, this was a great day, wasn't it?"

He was shy about the limelight, but he was patient and generous with his time and shared his expertise with anyone who had questions about a racing sled, sometimes enduring questions from reporters with a smile. Bill showed me how to ride my first snowmobile on a frozen lake in Alaska, and he explained to me the basics of things like shock valving and clutch rebuilding so that I could help the public understand what made our team so good.

Bill was also one of the first people in Wausau to accept this Chicago transplant, and over the years we worked together, he taught me much about values, and what's really important in life, though me might not realized it, or would have believed it if you told him. When Bill and Tom left for Polaris and I eventually left for Evinrude in Milwaukee, we didn't have a chance to talk much, but not a week has gone by when I haven't recalled one of his great expressions, one liners or words of wisdom with a smile.

I know this is a difficult time for your family, but I wanted you to know that Bill's kind, wise, old soul made a lasting impression on many, many of us, and that he really did make a difference in how I live my life.

I will keep you in my thoughts during this difficult time, and I'll always have Bill in my thoughts.

To the Rader Family: Bill was a HUGE part of our racing success with both Skidoo and Polaris. He helped our team (7 members) at Skidoo as we were together for testing and shows on several occations. On race day-many years-he was the best ally you could ask for. When we decided to take my son Chas racing, I called Bill. We were automatically accepted as part of the Polaris family and I had a machine inside of one week. His techinal support was outstanding...he was an even better friend. They say 'God only takes the best'--Bill Rader was the best! Signed Metz Motorsports c/o Todd, Brian and Chas Metz, Kevin and Brad Carstenson, Dave Steinke, Kurt Werner, Ty DuBois.
