Alan Abraham Obituary

Alan Kenneth Abraham

June 22, 1943 - May 8, 2025

Alan Kenneth Abraham, age 81, of Fitchburg, WI, passed away on May 8, 2025, at his home. He was born in Milwaukee, WI on June 22, 1943, to Allen and Eunice (Grede) Abraham.

Alan spent much of his youth in and around Montello, WI where he developed his love of the outdoors. After graduating from high school, he attended Wisconsin State University - Stevens Point until he was drafted into the Army and spent fourteen months in Vietnam as an infantryman. Upon his return, he married Sharon McMahon on April 1, 1967, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello, WI.

After earning a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, he voluntarily returned to military service as an officer in the US Army Reserve. After residing in West Virginia and Missouri, he returned to Wisconsin and settled in Fitchburg.

While in the Madison area, Alan spent more than thirty years in distinguished service to our country and its veterans. During that period, he was both the Commander of the 44th General Field Hospital Unit and the Administrative Chief of Staff for the William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital. Alan was stationed in Europe for two years supporting the coalition forces during Operation Desert Storm. He also served as the Chief Liaison between the WI Army National Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers for disaster mitigation. He retired from the US Army as a Colonel.

Alan spent much of his free time hunting and fishing in the woods and lakes of central and northern Wisconsin. He was an avid sports fan - following the Badgers of his alma mater, Green Bay Packers, and Milwaukee Brewers. He was also fond of surprising his family with visits to the various major league stadiums across the country.

Alan is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Sharon (McMahon) Abraham; his devoted children, Molly (Steven Premeau) Abraham and William Grede Abraham; and his sister, Merrianne Mlsna.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and pets he loved so much that he occasionally called his children by their names - Gus, a Chocolate Labrador and Birdie, an English Bulldog.

At Alan's request, no services are planned. The family suggests donations to Delta Waterfowl, Disabled American Veterans, or Tunnels to Towers.

Alan was a great mentor both at the VA in Madison and teaching a FIB about fishing in WI with Rapalas. We both shared an appreciation of our Army service in Vietnam. You are certainly missed and not forgotten.

Sharon, I'm sorry to hear of Alan's passing - he was always a good neighbor. I lost Ken this past winter, so I know how you must be feeling. Just take things one day at a time.

It is so sad to see Alan gone. He was energetic and always appeared happy. In the late 1980s, Alan worked in the Chief of Staff's office near the Supply Service, where I worked as the Assistant Chief of Inventory Management. Many years later, we found ourselves on a mock jury together.
