Carol Enid Frykenberg
December 24, 1931 - May 12, 2024
MADISON - Carol E. (Addington) Frykenberg, age 92, of Madison, WI, a good and faithful servant of her Lord and Saviour, went Home to Glory at midnight on the 12th day of May, 2024.
Born on the December 24, 1931, to Roland Ernest and Grace B. (Withiam) Addington in St. Paul, MN, where she grew up, graduated from Wilson High School in 1949, and received a B.A. from Bethel College in 1953 in music (organ) and in literature. At an early age she committed her life to Jesus Christ, and for the rest of her life sought to honor and serve Him.
In 1952, she married Robert Eric Frykenberg in St. Paul. She served as organist in a number of churches in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Carol and Robert (Bob) moved to Berkeley, CA, in 1954, so that Bob could pursue further graduate studies. There she became organist of Lakeside Baptist Church in Oakland, and worked for Shell Development Company in Emeryville. From 1958 to 1961 she and her family lived in London and, after a year in Chicago, moved to Madison in 1962. Again she became a church organist, serving Faith Baptist Church of Monona from 1963 to 1979.
In 1970 she was employed by the School of Music at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, serving as Undergraduate Advisor in Music Education, and for ten years, from 1976 to 1986, also as administrator of the Summer Music Clinics for junior and senior high school students. She retired from the university in 1998. Joining Christ Presbyterian Church in 1988, she served a term as an elder. Throughout her years in Madison, with her husband she served InterVarsity Christian Fellowship by cordially hosting meetings of students and faculty.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Eric (Bob); three children: Ann Lewis, Brian Frykenberg (Sarah), and Craig Frykenberg (Audrey); five grandchildren: Ian Lewis (Samantha), Rachel (Myko) Olivier, Matthew Frykenberg (Paulina), Samuel Frykenberg, and David Frykenberg; and four great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Worship Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 13, 2024, in the Resurrection Chapel of Oakwood Village's University Woods Campus at 6205 Mineral Point Road, Madison, WI, 53705.

Carol was my mother's longtime friend, and in that role she became like a mother to me. When Betty and Carol got on the phone, they would talk like sisters. They had so much in common: love of music, love of beauty, love of nature, love of family, and most of all, love of God. I felt the overflow of Carol's affections during all my years growing up in Madison, and during each visit I made in my adult years living in New England. When my mother moved to Oakwood, Carol and Bob reached out to her in significant ways to help her make the transition. On my visits, we would step down for tea with Carol. After mother passed, Carol and I stayed connected through phone calls, which I always treasured. Our needy world needs more people like Carol -- genuinely interested in helping others thrive, faithful to her Lord and Savior, and seeking to live a noble and honorable life. I miss her greatly, and always will. With a heart full of thanks and love, Mary Alexander Whallon

Carol was "instrumental" (pun intended) in my years as a Music Ed major at UW-Madison. She always had the answer to any question and was always a friendly face on the 5th floor of Humanities. At the UW Summer Music Clinic, Carol (AKA "Ma Clinic") was a calm presence in any situation. What joy to reconnect at Christ Presbyterian Church when I joined the staff there in 1991. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Carol was often a gracious host to me while I was studying at the UW Madison. I knew of her work with the School of Music but not of her extensive service as a church organist. My condolences to Bob ( my former professor ) and entire family.
