ALBANY - Catherine Corry Blakemore of Albany, WI, died on Wednesday, August 3, 2022.
Catherine was born on December 21, 1933, in Springfield, OH. Born Catherine Stewart Corry, she was the daughter of Home and Cornelia (Black Adams) Corry.
Catherine graduated from Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1951, and was a 1955 graduate of Wellesley College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a M.A. in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1959, and a M.A. in Education from the University of Colorado-Denver in 1993.
In 1966, she married Francis Blakemore, from whom she was divorced in 1999.
From 1956 to 1966 Catherine worked in Washington, D.C., performing research for the United States Congress at the Legislative Reference Service (now the Congressional Research Service). In Denver, she did research for two organizations and in the 1990s taught at the Clayton Charter School and the Hope Center. She was a book publisher (Adams-Pomeroy Press) and the author of eleven books in the areas of education and multiculturalism.
Catherine enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and pets; competitive racewalking; reading; being a fan of the Colorado Rockies, and the Denver Broncos; working with inner-city children; and serving as a church, community, classroom, and adult literacy volunteer. In Albany she headed the Albany Library Book Club, the Reuben's Run Committee, and the Downtown Revitalization Committee of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.
Catherine is survived by her son, James (Grace) Blakemore of London, England; her daughter, Elizabeth Blakemore of Albany; her grandchildren: Eliza, Henry, and Annabelle Blakemore of London; her niece, Anne Corry of New York City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John Corry; her sister-in-law, Emily Corry; and her cousin, Martha Corry and Walter Von Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday August 8, 2022, at Albany United Methodist Church with Pastor Kelly Jahn officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Albany. A visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at shriner111.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Albertson Memorial Library in Albany or to the Wheatridge Presbyterian Church in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
