David Irwin Obituary

David Ralph Irwin, a cherished educator and dedicated traveler who embraced the adventure of life, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025, at Rainbow Hospice in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin. He was 84.

A Life of Education and Exploration.

Born in Milwaukee, WI, on April 14, 1941, to the late Ethel and Clifford Irwin, David spent his childhood in Cudahy, WI, then attending Drake University before dedicating his life to education in the Madison school district.

His teaching career began at Madison Central High before he became a long-tenured, respected faculty member at Madison West High School. David was more than a teacher; he was a profound influence and mentor who shaped countless young lives. A rare professional highlight came when he was officially recognized by Stanford University as an outstanding teacher, specifically for his exceptional influence on a student selected for the prestigious Frederick Emmons Terman Scholarship.

Beyond the classroom, David coached both the Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer teams at West High, fostering teamwork and discipline on the field.

The World as a Classroom.

David's true passions lay in exploring the world, a pursuit he shared with his beloved wife, Kathleen. He was blessed to have traveled to each continent several times, always seeking out new cultures and landscapes. He found joy in the quiet meditation of walking the beautiful beaches of Captiva Island, Florida, carefully collecting unique seashells. An ardent lover of nature, David found peace and wonder in every corner of the planet, from the most remote wilderness to his own backyard garden.

Family.

David is now reunited with his soulmate, his loving wife of 59 years, Kathleen Irwin, who preceded him in death.

He leaves behind a legacy carried on by his devoted son, Patrick Irwin and his wife Stacey Schaefer of Madison, and his adored grandson, Malcolm Irwin of Madison. His quiet wisdom, guidance, and passion for learning will be deeply missed by his family and the thousands of students he inspired.

I never had Dave as a teacher while attending Madison West HS but got to know him once I was on staff at West. He was a great guy, great teacher and great guy. He belongs in heaven. Happy Holidays in Heaven, Dave. Terry

I was a student of David's at Central High School and remained friends with David and Kathy through the years. I enjoyed both of them very much. My condolences to their family.

Mr. Irwin was one of my teachers at Madison West. Never condescending, never dismissive, he treated me--and all students--with kind, adult respect. I am now seventy years old. I have been fortunate to have found some truly fine, patient teachers along the way. Mr. Irwin was one of these for me. A teacher, in the fullest and truest sense of the word.
I am honored to write this tribute to him to share with his family, and deeply saddened to learn of his passing.
