Dwayne Berg Obituary

Dwayne Paul Berg

February 12, 1937 - August 27, 2025

OREGON - Dwayne Paul Berg passed away on August 27, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born in Beloit on February 12, 1937, to Oscar and Viola (Marian) Berg. He graduated from Beloit Memorial in 1955 where he was a four-sport athlete. He played in two state basketball tournaments and the Junior American Legion Baseball tournament held in the Braves' Milwaukee County Stadium. He also was class president and represented Beloit at a Badger Boys State session.

Dwayne graduated from UW-Madison in 1959 and was commissioned in the United States Army as 2nd Lieutenant that same year. He married Karen Nelson, and son, David, was born in 1960 while they were stationed in Germany. Upon return to the U.S., Dwayne was employed by American Family Insurance as an underwriter/computer programmer, moved on to work as a computer analyst for the State of Wisconsin and then, after 25 years at Rayovac, retired in 1994 as the Information Center Manager.

Dwayne remained physically active throughout his adult life, and with Lee Wilcox, started the Syttende Mai run in 1973. He ran in the first 13 races and directed the race for 20 years. He ran in the Boston Marathon in 1976 and 1977, skied in the Birkebeiner several times and logged hundreds of miles on his road bike.

He married Susie in 1983. They lived in Stoughton before buying a farmhouse in New Glarus, opening it as a B&B in 1994. They retired as innkeepers in 2002 and moved to a country home in Brooklyn in 2004.

Throughout his life he loved performing, sharing his talent with the Stoughton Village Players and Oregon Straw Hat players. With his great bass voice, he sang for many years with the Edvard Grieg Chorus and the choir of People's United Methodist Church. Dwayne was always ready to entertain with his many stories about Ole, Lena and Little Johnny.

Dwayne and Susie loved to travel the United States and beyond, visiting more than 18 countries. Among the most memorable trips were snorkeling in the Caribbean, whale watching in Baja, and dog sledding in Minnesota. Dwayne was proud of his Norwegian heritage and enjoyed exploring his ancestral home in Norway.

As life slowed down, the Bergs moved to senior housing in 2022. Dwayne transitioned to the memory care unit of Skaalen in Stoughton in 2024.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Marian Berg; and sister, June. He is survived by his wife, Susie; son, David (Beth); and granddaughters, Anna (Ian), Emily and Lauren (Matt). He leaves behind many relatives and friends who will mourn and miss him.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care he received from the staff at Skaalen and Agrace HospiceCare of Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dane County Humane Society in memory of his beloved dog, Bo, or to Agrace HospiceCare.

A celebration of life will be held at HALVERSON'S EVERYTHING NICE, 1965 Barber Drive, Stoughton, from 1 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
