Richardson, George A.

SARASOTA, Fla. - George A. Richardson died Nov. 6, 2021, in Sarasota, Fla. He was born May 16, 1932, in Madison, Wis., to George E. and Ellen H. Richardson, and grew up on a farm outside of Verona, Wis. He was a graduate of the Edgewood Academy of the Sacred Heart, Madison, Wis., Class of 1950.

He married his high school sweetheart, Jean Ann Allen, on July 24, 1950. They had a loving marriage of 71 years until her death on Sept. 26, 2021. He is survived by eight adult children, Stephen (Susan) Richardson, Thomas (Linda) Richardson, Sue (Darrel) Lackey, Frances (Douglas) Hauser, James (Dianne) Richardson, Sabrina (Doug) Light, Caroline Rehling, and Norbert (Donna) Richardson; 21 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings; twin sons, John and Daniel; and daughter, Mary (each of whom died as newborns).

George was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science degree, and the University of Wisconsin Medical School with a Medical Doctor degree. He did a medical residency at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kan. Upon completion of his residency, he and his family moved to Union, Mo., where George joined his brother, William Richardson, in a family medical practice. He actively practiced medicine for over 40 years. During this time, he served as Chief of Staff of Mercy Hospital, Washington, Mo., and as chairman of the Department of Family Practice. To his friends, patients, and colleagues, he was "Dr. George."

Dr. George was instrumental in the establishment of youth football programs, including high school football at St. Francis Borgia and Union High Schools. He impacted hundreds of young people both as a youth football coach and as team physician, walking the sidelines during games. He served as team physician for Union High School. In recognition of his service, in 1996 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to Missouri Interscholastic Athletics. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Union High School Hall of Fame for his 35 years as team physician.

George was a long-time resident of Union, Mo., where he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, and later a resident of Krakow, Mo., where he was a member of St. Gertrude's Parish. He was an active member of the Franklin County Country Club. George and Jean moved to Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Fla., in 2002, upon his retirement from medical practice. He was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Sarasota, Fla. George was an avid reader, painter, golfer, skier, swimmer, and tennis player.

There will be a visitation at OLTMANN FUNERAL HOME in Union, Mo., on Friday, Nov. 26, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. A parish Rosary will be said at 2:30 p.m. at OLTMANN FUNERAL HOME on Friday, Nov. 26. A funeral Mass to honor the lives of both George and Jean Richardson will be held at ST. GERTRUDE'S CATHOLIC CHURCH on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m., with burial in the church cemetery to follow. Memorials in honor of George Richardson can be made payable to the Union R-XI Foundation and sent to the Foundation at P.O. Box 500, Union, MO 63084.
