Gregg Cramer Obituary

Gregg Alan "Doc" Cramer

April 13, 1952 – August 15, 2024

MADISON - Obit authored by Gregg "Doc" Cramer.

Much to my surprise, I died on August 15, 2024, in (Waynesville, OH, hometown of my pioneer ancestors from the 1800s). This was not my plan, but I did not always get my way while alive. On Easter Sunday in 1952 (April 13), Frances (nee Cook) and Ross Cramer added to their family of Kathy (then 7) and Scott (nearly 4) by introducing the highlight of their lives: me. While officially Gregg, I was called Skip until tenth grade, when I became "Doc."

Midvale, Cherokee, and West High Schools tried everything to educate me, but failed miserably; they did, however unknowingly, encourage me to go into education.

Teaching high school English and coaching football (and some track) at Middleton High School for 33 years, I met many wonderful students and staff who should by now have had adequate opportunities to get therapy to recover from the experience.

My high school sweetheart Nancy Johnson and I tried hard to raise our three children, Kelly, Casey, and Clancy properly. If they turned out okay, it's because of Nancy's influence (not mine). Their spouses Adam Schoultz, Kelsey Francis, and Katie Hollar rounded out our family. My hope is that they can successfully raise our grandchildren Tony and John Schoultz, and Caleb, Christopher, Karis, Katherine, and Callum Cramer, along with our grand dogs/cats Gaius, Daisy and Hunter.

I bowled inconsistently and enjoyed trying to play golf; I also supported the Packer, Brewers, and Badgers. If those teams struggle in the near future, it's because they lost a loyal fan. I also terrorized Old Man Coffee, meeting with friends at Barrique's and in Brian's garage. They are most likely relieved by my passing. Others to whom I owed money might truly miss me. Have an average day.

Services will be held, Thursday, September 5, 2024, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church 7337 Hubbard Avenue, Middleton WI at 2:00 p.m.. Visitation /Reception is at Middleton Lake View Park, 6300 Mendota Avenue following the service.

The family requests, instead of flowers, please send funds to the "Doc Cramer Memorial Scholarship," MCPASD Education Foundation, 7106 South Avenue, Middleton, WI 53562. The scholarship was set up to honor Doc's love of education and athletics.

Send Doc stories or pictures to [email protected] for all to enjoy.

"We are all in this together" and in that manner, he was loved by many. Rest in Peace Good Man.

I had Cramer for one semester of Lit in my senior year. A short time, but he left an impression. Sadly, I never had the opportunity to speak with him again after graduation, but there have been many times I´ve thought about him and his class since 1986. I´ll always hang onto my copy of Lord of the Flies which he signed over to me "Sold to Ike, by order of the Queen", after I was a party to inadvertently damaging his class copy and having to pay to replace it. RIP Skip.

Doc is a legend of Middleton. He would depart Old Man Coffee at Barriques by wishing us an average day, but seeing Doc always made it better than average. I am so glad he was able to join Tom Kittle, Brett Veerman and me for golf at Blackhawk this summer. His buddies at Odana will miss him dearly. Doc loved the English language and wordplay. His students who were lucky enough to learn the nuances of the English language under his guidance will have a lifelong anamnesis written by the best--Doc Cramer
Doc we'll all see you presently. Put in a good word for me

Doc and I met on the first day of first grade at Midvale School. Not only were we in the same classroom, but our desks were right next to each other. That was quite a year! It was also the beginning of a very special 66-year friendship. I was very often the recipient of his good-natured and well-intentioned (although occasionally misguided) humor, but I will remember him first and foremost as the guy who was always there to help when I was going through a difficult time in life. Rest in peace, Doc. Rest in peace.

Doc used to tie my shoes for me in Kindergarten. We played a lot of baseball together in grade school. Even though I was not very good he was always very encouraging and never demeaning. I also went to West High with him and he always treated everyone with respect and had a joke for them. I reconnected with him in the last few years at Barriques and then at Brian´s for coffee. He was a great guy and I will miss him. My condolences.
