James Smithback Obituary

James Smithback

September 17, 1931 - May 19, 2025

James E. Smithback of Deerfield, Wis., died on May 19, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, at the age of 93. James was the son of Edward and Clara Smithback, who preceded him in death. On October 21, 1951, James married Donna Judd in Madison, Wis. who also has preceded him in death.

James graduated from Central High School, Madison, Wis. in 1949 and served in the US Navy and was involved as an active member of Jesters, and St. Paul's Liberty Church. In retirement years, he so enjoyed his garden and his homemade tomato juice. In his younger years, fishing trips to Canada and deer hunting were highlights. Jim and his wife Donna were able to winter in Florid for over 35 years in the Gulf Harbours neighborhood. He enjoyed sailing and crab trapping in the Gulf of Mexico. He had a lot of accomplishments on this earth, but he was most excited to go to heaven.

Special thanks to Pastor Holly, Denny Rahn and the church family and his wonderful Saddle Ridge neighbors.

James is survived by his four children, Lynn (Kevin), Laura, David and Stacey; seven grandchildren, Lindsey (Bill), Jeffrey (Becky), Michael (Haley), Kellen (Dana), Andrea (Glenn), Evan (Tiffany), and Stephanie and five great grandchildren.

James is preceded in death by his wife, Donna Smithback; parents, Edward and Clara Smithback; brother, Richard Smithback; and granddaughter, Kaitlin.

A private family service has already been held.

Memorials can be made to St. Paul's Liberty Church, 3494 Oak Park Road, Deerfield, WI 53531 in James's name.
