Jerry Lawson, born on November 25, 1947, died in Madison, Wis. on September 30, 2025. He was a man of many gifts who worked hard, read widely, laughed often, and loved to tell a good story. He was a writer, a political advisor, a furniture maker, a builder, an antiques dealer, a veteran, a loving husband and father, and devoted friend.
Deborah Carter Lawson, to whom he was devoted for more than 37 years, survives him as do his children and step-children, Cora Harders, Drew Lawson, Abigail Carter, Benjamin Carter, and Tyler Carter; three of his siblings, Allen (Linda) Lawson, Susan (Ron) Hauser, and Kathy (Jerry) Vaardseth; and five much loved grandchildren: Beatrix Carter, Bodhi Harders, James Elsberry, Sam Carter, Jack Carter, and Alexander Lawson.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Nakoma Golf Club, 4145 Golf Club Road, in Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Options in Community Living, Inc., which provided thoughtful support to Jerry.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Jerry since 1997, when he was in charge of the media for my Mayoral campaign. A great working relationship grew into friendship with Jerry and Deborah for my wife Carol and I. Many dinners, events, talks followed. He introduced me to many historical authors, expanding my interests and horizons.
Jerry had a wonderful sense of humor and a ready laugh. Always fun. Always engaging. And was an extraordinary cook (I truly miss his dinners and grilling in particular). Jerry loved to fish, occasionally staying at and fishing by my cabin on Lake WIsconsin. A cabin which Jerry and his team did a great job completely rebuilding in 2008. But Jerry would fish just about any time he got the chance. North, south, east and west.
I shall so much miss his ready wit, laughter and company. And always remember the same about him. My heart goes out to Deb and all of his extended family - all of whose members he cared for and loved deeply.
