Joyce Stommel Obituary
April 5, 1933 - May 22, 2025
MADISON - Joyce A. Stommel, age 92, of Middleton, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Oakwood Village West. She was born on April 5, 1933, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Clifton and Marie (Kaehr) Anderson.
Joyce graduated from Wauwatosa High School in 1951 and attended UW-Madison, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. In her younger years, she was a competitive downhill skier and medaled in numerous races. Joyce was united in marriage to Raymond Stommel on October 16, 1954, in Milwaukee, Wis., after which she moved all over the world due to Ray's military career. After her children were grown, she embarked on a 25-year career as a licensed realtor, during which time she sold homes in Hawaii, Virginia, and Michigan. When she and Ray finally retired, they chose a beautiful, wooded condo in Middleton as the place to spend their last 25 years.
Joyce was an amazing cook – she loved Julia Child. She was also a talented seamstress and an avid gardener. Her rose gardens were a sight to behold. Joyce adored animals of all types. Wherever they called home, they always had a beloved dog or cat. Some of her favorite charities were the ones saving dolphins and whales.
God blessed Ray and Joyce with 69 years of marriage, two children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Anne Marie (Gordon) Govier; and son, Robert (Jayne) Stommel; grandchildren, Jon Michael and Clifton Stommel, Andrew and Sam Govier, Sara (Ryan) Gordon and Brian (Mika) Wendt; and great-grandchildren, Lana and Audrey Gordon, Eden Govier, and Anna Wendt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; and her parents, Clifton and Marie.
A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025. Burial will take place at Union Grove Cemetery.
