Leon J. Veith
June 3, 1930 - December 28, 2025
Leon J. Veith, age 95, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025 at Prairie Gardens Assisted Living. He was the son of Arthur and Alice (Kraus) Veith, born on June 3, 1930. Leon spent his entire life in Sun Prairie, with the exception of college at Platteville and his time spent in Korea. He attended Sacred Hearts Grade School and was a 3 sport athlete at Sun Prairie High School. Leon graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville where he played quarterback for the school's football team, earning many honors.
Midway through college, Leon was drafted. He served in the US Army's 15th Heavy Tank Battalion as a Tank Commander. After returning home from Korea, he completed his degree in Agriculture from Platteville. While at Platteville, Leon met his wife, Dawn Skaife. Leon and Dawn were married on April 24, 1954. Leon and Dawn had three sons, David, Steven and Mark.
Leon and Dawn purchased and worked 270 acres of farmland, on which they produced cash crops and livestock. Leon also dedicated himself to teaching veteran farmers modern techniques on site at his farm. In addition to farming for 25 years, Leon and Dawn also sold American Family Insurance from their home. One thing they enjoyed doing together was dancing. Leon and his wife, Dawn, were great dance partners at Herreman's Supper Club for years.
Leon purchased the Sun Prairie Golf Course in December of 1982, and opened the family business in the spring of 1983. Leon would own and operate the SPGC with his family for 39 years before retiring at the age of 92. Leon was a golf enthusiast himself, and always enjoyed playing a competitive round with friends. Leon's competitive spirit was evident in all he did, and it served him well in athletics, business endeavors, and his past time activities. He was an avid ice fisherman, enjoyed playing cards and gambling, and always loved being out in the sun. Leon loved a good Western, but his favorite movie was "The Man From Snowy River," which he recommended to everyone. Leon's favorite shared stories with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren always centered around farm life or stories about his brother and sisters on their family farm. Leon is survived by his three sons, David (Kym) Veith, Steven (Kim) Veith, and Mark Veith. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Ashley (Jeffrey) Koopmans, and Amber (Austin) Scheib; and his three loving great-grandchildren, Phoebe and Jessa Scheib, and Clayton Koopmans. Leon is further survived by his dear sister, Mary Helt; and the many nieces and nephews he had the pleasure of knowing. Leon is preceded in death by his lovely wife Dawn; by his parents Arthur and Alice; by brother, Robert (Joan) Veith; sisters Isabel (Vernon) Schleicher and Carol (Al) Kimball; and his brother-in-law, Robert Helt.
The family of Leon Veith would like to sincerely thank the staff at Prairie Gardens for the attention and care given to Leon, and also express our sincere gratitude for the exceptional, dedicated service given to Leon by Brighton Hospice Care. A private service and Celebration of Life will take place in Leon's honor in the spring. Those wishing to make a donation in Leon's honor can do so at the Brighton Hospice Care website:
