Michael McCormick Obituary

Michael F. McCormick

Madison- Michael F. McCormick, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughters at his side on January 19, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on January 10, 1939, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, Mike attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Madison became home. Mike had a long and successful career selling steel for Wheeling Corrugating Company. His success stemmed from his uncanny ability to forge a friendship with virtually anyone he met, including his customers. His sense of humor and ability to connect over a story or mutual acquaintance carried over into his personal life as well.

More often than not, you could find Mike on the golf course at Nakoma Country Club. A skilled golfer, Mike brought precision and passion to every game. Whether competing in tournaments, playing a friendly round with friends, coaching his daughter, or providing anyone who asked an insightful tip on the driving range, Mike's love for the game was evident. He approached golf with discipline and grace, earning respect both on and off the course. In addition to his golfing prowess, Michael found great joy in fishing. He loved the serenity of a quiet lake, the thrill of a well-fought catch, and the companionship of those who joined him.

Mike shared a beautiful love story with his wife, Rita, whom he met by chance over a burger at the Laurel Tavern in Madison. That fateful meeting blossomed into a lifelong partnership and marriage of fifty-five years. Mike was immediately smitten upon meeting Rita, and for their first date he took her skiing in Alpine Valley. Within two years, they were married, and they spent their honeymoon skiing in Aspen.

Mike was incredibly proud of Rita's career as a pioneer in the field of infection control. Her dedication, intelligence, and contributions to the field were a constant source of admiration. He supported her unwaveringly, celebrating her achievements and the lasting impact she made in her profession.

Above all else, he was devoted to his family. His love for Rita, his daughters, and his grandchildren was boundless. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent with them. Mike once said he outlived his expectations in every way, not only in the years he lived, but in the wife he married and the children he raised.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Rita; his children, Meghan Harty (John) and Kelly Kirk; and his grandchildren, Alexandra, Noah and Keira.

Mike's legacy lives on in the echoes of a perfect drive down the fairway, the stillness of a quiet lake at dawn, and the laughter of those he loved. Though he is now playing the ultimate "19th hole," his spirit, humor, and love will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

A small private family gathering will be held at a later date.
