MONONA - Patricia Engbring, age 86, of Monona, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. She was born in Racine, Wis., on Jan. 23, 1936.
The daughter of Harold and Marie (Sullivan) Burdick, Patricia graduated from St. Catherine's High School in Racine and St. Agnes Nursing School in Fond du Lac. She married Jerry Engbring on July 11, 1959, in Racine, Wis.
Pat's faith was very important to her, and she was a devoted Catholic. She was proud to be involved in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where she was a member for over 60 years. She shared her love of God and a good party on the church's hospitality committee.
Pat cared for many patients over the years while working the night shift as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital. Generations of young nurses benefited from her expertise and marveled at her ability to keep physicians in line. She provided efficient and compassionate care throughout her career. She was also the unsilent partner of the Engbring family business, Jerry's Camping Center.
Pat loved her family and taking trips to the casino. Many grandchildren hit their first slot machine jackpot with grandma by their side. She enjoyed traveling with Jerry all over the globe. She collected Coleman irons and was active in the Coleman collector community. Pat was a big Wisconsin sports fan, (UW, Packers, Brewers, and Bucks) especially of UW Hockey. She and Jerry held season ticket for over 40 years. Pat had an optimistic outlook on life and a positive attitude She tolerated her children, loved her grandchildren and adored her great-grandchildren. She had an uncanny ability to know when someone needed a hug, a pat on the back or a kick in the ass.
Patricia is survived by four sons, David (Michele Sippola) Engbring, Daniel (Anne) Engbring, Douglas (Sheila Murray) Engbring and Darren (Heidi) Engbring; by her daughter, Dawn (Ryan Raab) Engbring; six grandchildren, Megan (Mark) Eckstein, Erin (Eric Johnson) Engbring, Kelly (Brad) Pastika, Adam (Grace Ziegler) Engbring, Nora Engbring and Elliott Engbring ; two great-grandchildren, Henry Eckstein and Ruth Pastika ; brother-in-law, Ralph Engbring; and sister-in-law, Doris Burdick. In 1979, I was a brand new nurse on 6 West, St. Mary´s Hospital. It was a tough place to work, for any nurse, because it was geriatric medicine and oncology. I worked the PM shift with Pat for 3 years, before changing my career to pediatrics. But Pat stayed on 6 West a very long time after I left. She was one of the best nurses you would ever want: Compassionate, sympathetic, hardworking, stubborn, generous with her time and advice. She was a great mentor to this novice nurse. I could always lean on her when the shift was tough or sad; Pat had big shoulders. And boy was she ever proud of her family! Hardly a week went by when she wasn´t giving an update on her kids´ activities, or what she had to do at Jerry´s Camper on her days off from nursing. Pat was a tremendous influence to me and to so many others. I thought of her often over my career, and used her nursing style to mentor new generations of nurses. My condolences to the family for your great loss. Pat, Rest In Peace, you earned it!
