Patrick Frawley
Nov. 22, 1929 - Sept. 7, 2023
MADISON - Patrick Frawley, formerly of Madison, WI, died on Thursday, September 7, 2023, in St. Paul, MN, surrounded by loving family members, at age 93.
Patrick was born on November 22. 1929, in Appleton, WI. The youngest of four children, he enjoyed growing up with his loving family in Appleton in a house on the Fox River that was close to parks and St. Mary's Catholic Church. After high school, Patrick entered St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee to study to become a Catholic priest. After six years, he decided he wanted to marry and have a family. He then attended St. Norbert's College in DePere to get his BA and teacher certification.
Over the years, he obtained teaching licenses in English, social studies, Latin and German and a Masters Degree in Education in 1962. He first taught in Sparta, WI, where he met lifelong friends and began a career he loved. After five years he moved to Madison and began teaching at West High School. At summer school at UW-Madison in June 1959, he met Mary Douville in the Pine Room of the Lakeshore Dorm. They married on June 18, 1960, and were life partners for 58 years until Mary's death in 2018.
Their marriage was based on many shared values including a love for family, their community at Blessed Sacrament and a belief in serving others through education and volunteer work. Patrick thoroughly loved being a teacher at West High School. Known to his Latin students as Magister, he led his classes with energy and enthusiasm, and occasionally indulged in toga parties. He had great fondness for his students and genuinely enjoyed working with young people. He always said that he had the best students and was extremely happy to have taught at West High.
Patrick made some wonderful lifelong friends among the staff and served as the Foreign Language Department Chair for many of his 37 years at West. As a school leader, he listened to his colleagues and worked to mentor younger teachers. He won multiple teaching awards including the Bassett Award, and a Wisconsin Department of Education "Distinguished Teacher of Teachers" Award.
In 1983, one of his students was selected as a Presidential Scholar, identified Patrick as "the most significant contributor to his secondary education" and asked him to accompany him to Washington, DC, to accept this award at the White House.
Mary and Patrick had three children, Patrick Jr. (Rick), Ruth, and Ellen Mary who died shortly after birth. Patrick was a caring, sweet dad who by his own admission, was better with the kids when they were a little older. One of his favorite things to do with the kids was taking them swimming at Vilas Park or in lakes in Northern Wisconsin. On rare family trips to hotels, they would always make certain to pack suits and make a beeline for the pool. Patrick loved talking to everyone about books, politics, history and people. He was a good listener and kind man who loved to engage people in conversation.
In his retirement, he and Mary enjoyed traveling. Memorable highlights included trips to Hawaii and Australia. Closer to home, they loved visiting family in Wisconsin and the Twin Cities, and summer trips to their daughter Ruth and her husband Stu's cottage on Bird Lake in Northern Wisconsin.
After Mary died in 2018, Patrick always tried to stay positive even as his health declined, and through the harsh and painful loneliness of the Covid years when he was in lockdown at All Saints Assisted Living facility in Madison. When his care needs became too much for All Saints, he embarked on a new challenge and moved to St. Paul, MN, near his son, Rick, and wife, LeAnn. With Rick and LeAnn's help he was able to adjust to a new home. Their loving visits made his last two years special.
He is survived by his son, Rick (LeAnn); daughter, Ruth (Stu); and grandchildren: Hannah and Maddy Frawley, and David and Sarah Mondschein; as well as his special sister-in-law, Penny Duncan.
A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Madison on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
Our family would like to thank the sensitive and caring staff at All Saints Assisted Living and Agrace HospiceCare of Madison, and New Perspectives Assisted Living and Our Lady Of Peace Hospice in St. Paul, MN.

I only recently learned of Mr. Frawley's death. Mr. Frawley was an incredible teacher. He taught me a good deal of what I know about teaching, and is an influence on how I teach to this day. He also instilled in me a love of the Latin language and language learning in general. Salve Magister!

Mr. Frawley taught all three of our children, Elio, Daniela and Stephanie. They started going to Mr. Frawley's classes while they were attending Blessed Sacrament School since their parents believed that Latin grammar was at the basis of the languages used at home ( Italian and German). Mr. Frawley taught the ten-year olds together with his High School students. -- I attended some of his classes. As a colleague teacher, I was delighted by the atmosphere in the classes. Mr. Frawley was a great disciplinarian but of the fun-loving kind. He was also imaginative. For instance there was a yearly performance by the students of fairy tales, self-chosen in groups, in LATIN; I remember the kids and their friends in imaginative costumes walking around the Summit neighborhood and performing in front of the houses. The kids spoke Italian, German, Spanish, African languages and English. at home. With his help, they communicated in Latin! - the language that is the basis for 57 % of English words - as Mr. Frawley had written onto the walls of his classroom, together with dozens of other "classical" sayings and jokes. Mr. Frawley loved teaching difficult constructions. His humorous explanations, his sometimes sarcastic compliments to his well-beloved bright students, his smile and laugh made us all truly love him. My children now are grown up and all involved in teaching .
The Magister was a woderful teacher at West High, a marvelous conversationalist with the parents, an example that left my children-- now middle-aged adults -- with a model to remember and to follow.
Thank you, Mr. Frawley!
Signed, Charlotte Lang Bancaforte, Professor em. University of Wisconsin-Madison. September 21, 2023 with husband Prof.em. Benito Brancaforte and in the name of their children.

Toga parties, class pot lucks, plays in Latin! Mr. Frawley made learning fun. Just as important, he helped a shy kid from Blessed Sacrament adjust to big West High, tolerated my goofiness for four years and gave me a lifelong interest in reading and history. I was an OK student -- I admit to being the one who drooled at times. But Mr. Frawley (when we last spoke decades later I couldn't call him Pat) always made me want to try harder, to succeed. And to try to be a decent person. As my parents aged, they spoke often of his kindness at church. Mr. Frawley affected so many of us in positive ways. A life truly well lived. My deepest condolences. Salve, Magister!

I count Mr. Frawley as one of my top three favorite teachers from Kindergarten through grad school. His classes were always engaging and often fun. He clearly loved his job. (No assigned homework on the weekends was always appreciated.) I feel lucky to have been one of this gifted teacher´s many Latin students at West.

Patrick was my Latin teacher at West High School; and, he made Latin fun to learn. I think that he told us a story, that he'd once worked at a cemetery. He was a very memorable instructor!

We were so sorry to hear about Mr Frawley's passing.... we took Latin for four years with Magister and remember those classes fondly. Some favorite moments: translating The Cat in the Hat into Latin, and those signs up on the wall (Tua Mater Guerit Ocreas).
We will review our Cicero in his honor!

I had Mr. Frawley for 2nd and 3rd year Latin at West High School in the late 60's. He was a good man and a great teacher. I smile and think of him every time I (properly) turn a Latin phrase.
Ave atque vale, Magister!

Enduring gratitude for Mr. Frawley's instruction in Latin and his ability to make homeroom take on the comfort of a home base. He made me feel special and memorable. I'm sure others also had that experience. And I remember more Latin than one might imagine.

Mr. Frawley taught me German at West High in the early 70's. He was such a fun, animated teacher. I thought of him often while living in Zurich Switzerland. His enthusiasm gave me a love of the language that I'm still practicing.
Thank you Mr. Frawley.

Mr. Frawley was my Latin teacher and also was an important adult in my life when I went to West. I remember fondly our translation of Cicero when we substituted "Nixon" "Haldeman" and "Erlichman" for the Roman politicians. Mr. Frawley was also my mentor who helped me academically. He gave me confidence with being friendly and firm. I think that I became college material because of this great teacher. I grieve his loss, but I know this was a life well lived. Thank you, Herr Frawley, Magister Frawley.
