Paul was an internationally recognized expert in high-energy particle radiation effects on humans. Among other accomplishments his research included creation of one of the world's most intense sources of fast neutrons, establishing microdosimetry as the definitive technique for determining high energy neutron kerma coefficients, investigating the biological response of various cell-lines to fast neutrons, very low energy photons, and mixed fields of neutrons and photons to explore the fundamental response of cells to ionizing radiation, and determining comprehensive neutron kerma coefficients using pulsed beam neutron time of flight techniques.
Paul received many honors, including the William D. Coolidge award from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in 2016 and the UW Medical School Folkert O. Belzer Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Paul was a Fellow of AAPM and was the 2007 UW Rennebohm Research Professor. I am saddened to read of Paul DeLuca's passing. Paul graciously hosted me as an American Council on Education Fellow at UW-Madison in 2010-2011. He was a wealth of practical information about academic administration at a large, decentralized university. But I especially remember Paul for his ability to make connections with people. He had been to South Africa and at our first meeting spoke enthusiastically about his enjoyment of Rust and Vrede S.A. wine. After the ACE Fellowship ended, he kindly invited me to present at an APLU Academic Affairs meeting. I remember Paul very fondly and may he rest in peace and may his family be comforted by many, many fond memories of his life in the weeks, months, and years ahead. Darrell P. Kruger

I had the priviledge of meeting Paul, while I was a student at UW Madison. I attended several years from 1985-2013 and being an Alumni, I'm still working around the UW as a RideShare driver. Paul was kind and was someone you could learn many things from. He always had a smile. I'm sorry for your family's loss.
