Peter Weiler Obituary

Peter R. "Pete" Weiler Jr.

MADISON - Peter R. "Pete" Weiler Jr., beloved brother and uncle, sadly passed away on his 82nd birthday, August 10, 2024. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary (Weiler Talbert Scheunemann) and parents Mary and Peter Weiler. He left behind two brothers, a sister and their spouses, Willis and Linda Weiler, James and Diane Weiler and Phyllis (Weiler) and Daniel Ducey. Pete was the oldest and was not only admired and loved, but each felt the positive impact of his life on theirs. In addition, he left behind his dear friend Kathy Whitt.

Pete once said when he was young, he really did not like being called uncle (made him feel old) but in his last weeks he shared that of all the titles he had received his favorite one was uncle. The nieces and nephews that he cherished are James (Debra) Weiler, Julie Weiler and John (Aliiz) Weiler, Amelia Talbert, Dawn (Stephen) Stumbris and Jesse (Emily) Talbert, Jennifer (Jason) Peterson, and Daniel Ducey. He also loved his role as Grand Uncle to his 16 grand nieces and nephews.

Raised in Mt. Prospect, IL, Pete excelled at all he did starting at the age of 12 as the "publisher" of the Hi-Lusi Star (newsletter for those who lived on his street). In 1960 he graduated from Notre Dame High School for boys in Niles, Illinois. He graduated summa cum laude from St. Procopius College, Lisle, Illinois in 1964. In the same year, Pete received a fellowship in physics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he earned a master's degree in physics and a doctorate in physics. The University became home to him. He worked in Environmental Sciences and throughout his career, received many honors. The career milestones were important to him but what stands out to his family most was how genuine and kind he was to all he met.

A Celebration of Pete's life, with food and refreshments, will be held on October 5, 2024, from 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave., Madison.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Players Theatre and Cancer Research.
