Prugh, Robert Irvin "Bob"
MADISON - After a long, courageous battle with cancer, Robert Irvin "Bob" Prugh left us on Nov. 9, 2021. Robert was born on Christmas Day 1944 to Harry Irvin Prugh and Marjorie Hager Prugh of Des Moines, Iowa. His family instilled in Robert a love of politics and civic life, a strong belief in the potential of American democracy, an inquiring mind, love of books and travel, and a lifelong interest in anything newsworthy.
Robert was educated at Earlham College and immediately started an illustrious career in education, later earning a graduate degree from UW-Madison. Robert was devoted to teaching, and taught social studies and American history at Madison West High School for 30 years, earning the MMSD Distinguished Service Award upon retirement, and more importantly, receiving many letters from former students telling him how much he influenced their lives. He was a proud and active member of Madison Teachers' Inc. during his career. A friend introduced him to Carol Tortorice in May of 1972, and they married three months later, eventually welcoming their son, Adam, into the family. Robert will be remembered for his ready smile, rapier wit, his compassion for others, and his uncanny ability to bring reasoned discourse between students with opposing views.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Susan; and brother, Peter. Robert is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Adam (Jessica); sister, Sallie; and extended family, many friends, and thousands of grateful students. Loving husband and father, inspiring teacher, beloved colleague and friend, Robert will be dearly missed and never forgotten. A memorial service will be held after the holidays. Tributes can be sent in Robert's name to Earlham College, Institutional Advancement, 801 National Road, Richmond, IN, 47374.

Bob was a great teacher and just a great guy. His great wife, Carol, made them the perfect couple. I wish you well on your heavenly journey and Carol will remain in my prayers. Terry, T. Roach

Remembering him with so much joy and admiration. A teacher of unmatched talent and passion. Things I learned in his class still influence me to the day, 40+ years later.
