Foseid, Thomas "Tom"
BLACK EARTH - Thomas "Tom" Foseid, 73, passed peacefully in his sleep the evening of Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021. His two daughters, Heather Foseid and Alexandra Bronander, as well as his loving life companion, LuAnn Foseid, were by his side, surrounded by love, warm memories and good stories being retold about his life. He was born Dec. 10, 1947, third eldest son of Dr Oscar and Mary Jane Foseid's nine children and known by all as one of the handsomely tall Foseid brothers in multiple swim clubs. He would then go on to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving as a radio technician during the Vietnam War.
After the war and hitchhiking through Europe, our strong Marine returned home and went on to earn his degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, beginning a new adventure in his life. This is where he met his future wife, LuAnn. They created a beautiful life together, moving from Madison to Cross Plains to raise their two daughters. Tom was a craftsman, a scholar, a scientist, a painter, a lumberjack, a chef, a real renaissance man. He was the gold standard of the belief that when there was a job to be done, you stand up tall and do it. With the right tools, and a sharp pencil, you could teach yourself anything.
Tom was an overflowing wealth of knowledge and conversation that he was never afraid to share with those around him, especially his grandchildren. His faithful dog, Diesel, did not mind if treats were involved. When he was not working in the woods at the Foseid Farm, he was heavily active with the Cross Plains American Legion Post 245 and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Out of the many accomplishments and contributions, he was proud to be one of the lead historians in the building of the Cross Plains Veteran's Memorial honoring our local military who served in the various wars. Tom was also honored several times by the Madison Police department during his career as the building manager at the UW Madison Chemistry building for multiple acts of heroics, being the first to respond in lab fires and saving lives in the process. Tom can now finally retire and be at rest, enjoying his opera, golf, and the serenity of the woods.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 5 at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes Street, Cross Plains, WI. Military honors will follow at church. A livestream of Tom's service will be available at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 5. For donation information please see the Ryan Funeral Home website.

I am sad to learn of Tom´s death.
My heart goes out to his close family members -- my strongest memory of Tom is his great capacity to love !!
As to our adventures as teens and young adults maybe best to smile and remember in private
Luanne - it was you ,his love ,that made his life so complete.
Tom also carried a very special love for his youngest sister Kari - the times I witnessed his interactions with Kari showed to me what a beautiful, kind , patient loving man of great character Tom was.
A great friend
Tom I will miss the jam .

Very sorry to hear of Tom's passing....sending sincere sympathies to the Foseid family and his children and partner. Tom was a classmate of mine in grade school....a good friend as well as a neighbor in University Heights. The Foseids were a prominent clan in the Heights....fun, bright folks.....from a great family. I forwarded Tom's fine obituary on to my siblings since I was sure some of them knew a Foseid or two! Some fun memories I'll pass along: My oldest brother Gerry (4 years older) had a brief, chance encounter with Tom in Vietnam. Gerry was a Marine in Vietnam like Tom. Gerry relates that after the Tet Offensive he was on easy guard duty doing security on a bridge. Several trucks were heading north and out of one a "dusty Marine" leaned out and yelled "Hey Rohlich...what's going on?" Gerry yelled back "Hi...who are you?" The reply: "Tom Foseid"! Gerry wishes he had hooked up with Tom post war to share the memory. Semper Fi !
My brother Tom (two years older) remembers being good friends with
Mark and swimming with him at the Y...also stopping at a bakery on the way to the bus home and getting fresh, warm bread crumbs. He also remembers a "tedious task" one summer sanding down a wooden sailboat with Mark. One of my younger sisters, Ginny....remembers that one of my brother Henry's best friends was Johnny....who moved to the Austin area. She has a picture of Henry and Johnny from Henry's wedding in Austin.
Fond memories of Foseid/Rohlich contacts.
Our condolences to all the Foseids and Tom's loved ones. What an interesting and full life......
Sincerely,
Karl Rohlich
