William Brunkow Obituary

William C. Brunkow

Nov. 26, 1932 - Feb. 1, 2024

EAU CLAIRE - William C. Brunkow, 91, passed away February 1, 2024, at Oakwood Hills Senior Living Center in Eau Claire, WI. He was born in Juda, WI, to Clarence and Ruth (nee Petersen) Brunkow.

Bill was a loving, caring husband and partner to Janet (nee Batker) for 62 years. Together they shared a beautiful journey raising two children, Elizabeth (Mike) Thibodeau, and James (Colleen) Brunkow. He was also the grandfather to three wonderful grandchildren, Elizabeth Brunkow, Claire Brunkow and William Thibodeau. Bill was also close with his sister, Mary Pieper (Delmar) of Tacoma, WA. Bills dedication and love for his family was steadfast and unwavering and his presence will be deeply missed every day.

Bills journey began in the small town of Juda, where he was raised with the principled core values and qualities that would serve him well throughout of his life. He graduated from Juda High School in 1950, and continued on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating from the Business school and Army ROTC in 1954. After returning from his overseas Army assignment, Bill would marry the love of his life, Jan and eventually return to UW-Madison to complete his CPA, setting him up for his life's work.

After short stints in banking, bank examining and legislative audit, Bill would ultimately settle back in Madison to work in UW Systems Administration. As Director of Internal Audit, spanning an exceptional 30-plus years, he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow administrators, coworkers and acquaintances and treasured the abiding friendships garnered over a lifetimes work.

Free time would see Bill and Jan enjoying many activities together - travel, cruises, dining, and their favorite pastime of cards (bridge and euchre). Bill was an avid Badger Athletics supporter, Chicago Bear backer and most notably a lifelong diehard Cub fan.

Bills professional skill set led to many years of altruism; donating his time to church boards and projects, professional organizations (ACUA), The Red Cross, and his two favorite Kiwanis Clubs; Madison West and Niceville, FL.

A celebration of life for Bill will be held in May and if so inclined; memorials can be made in his name to Niceville Kiwanis Flag Program, Niceville, FL, which has a direct and positive impact on the local youth in Niceville.

"Dad will forever be remembered for his kindness, patience, intelligence and unbound love for his family and friends. He leaves behind a big smile, a lifetime of cherished memories, a legacy of grace and a profound impact on all the lives he touched. We love you Dad.
