Charles Spurgin Obituary

Charles "Chuck" Spurgin
February 13, 1939 - January 10, 2025
Charles "Chuck" H. Spurgin, 85, of Madison, SD, passed away of natural causes on Friday, January 10, 2025 at his home. Visitation with family present will be held on Saturday, January 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kinzley Funeral Home, Madison.
Charles Haden Spurgin was born February 13, 1939 to James and Myrtle (Koepp) Spurgin. He graduated from Oldham High School in 1957. Chuck married Delaine "Cookie" Johnson on July 1, 1960 at Lake Whitewood Lutheran Church in Arlington, SD and two children, Cindy and Kevin, were born from that union.
Chuck was passionate about cars. He worked at service stations while growing up. He was employed at L & L Motors in Madison for several years and later became manager. When that business was sold, he went on to work at PPD Inc. in Madison and worked there until he retired. He spent his retirement mowing and tinkering with anything he could find.
Racing was a huge part of his life, first as a part owner and then as a mechanic helping his son. #7 will forever be a favorite number for a lot of family members.
Chuck had a special name for people he liked--if he didn't call you a "wrinklepecker" or "wrinkle" you would wonder what was wrong with him. He loved getting visits from people but would never visit you-you had to visit him. Chuck also loved boxing and he hunted and fished whenever he could. Also, he was very particular about his "stuff". Cindy wanted to dust and box "stuff" up, but kept being told "NO! Dust preserves. Leave it be!"
Chuck is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Steve) Christiansen; his son, Kevin Spurgin (JoLynn Opdahl); grandchildren, Christy (Adam) Leighton, Chelsey (Cody) Carper, Chase Christiansen, Chantel (Dana) Felderman, Shannon (Max) Dreager and Tavyn Hallan; great-grandchildren, Breckyn, Brooks, Gradyn and Gracyn Leighton, Kynley, Braxton and Lakyn Felderman and Beau and Brock Dreager; sister, Marilyn (Dick) Linneman; brother, Richard Spurgin; and many nieces, nephews and family members residing in Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Shirley Borah and Donald Spurgin, and great-grandson, Laker Felderman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be donated to a charity of the family's choice.

Have been away from South Dakota for a long time, so I´m thankful that I got to visit Chuck last time I was home. He was always very good to me, and although I didn´t see him often, I will miss that! Condolences to Kevin, Cindy and their entire families.
