Austin Clay Stout
Dec. 31, 1934 ~ Nov. 28, 2023
BUHL - Austin "A.C" Stout, also known as Ace, was born December 31, 1934, in Saffell, Lawrence County, Arkansas. His parents were Austin C Stout and Hester Lee Hennessee.
A.C. spent his adult career in Winterhaven, California, and Yuma, Arizona. He retired as a Hydroelectric Plant Operator for the Imperial Irrigation District.
He was married to Gladys (McMurdie) in 1973. A.C. became good friends with his in-laws, Kenny and Linda Evans and Glen and Linda McMurdie, with whom he spent many hours rock hunting in Southwest Arizona and Northern Mexico. They were particularly fond of fire agates and A.C. became very proficient at cutting, grinding & polishing the multi-colored semi-precious stones.
He spent most Sunday evenings with his stepson and daughter, Kenny and Linda, and their five young children. The Evans kids grew up with grandpa A.C. being the only grandpa they knew and loved. The boys, in particular, hunted deer, elk, doves, quail and even javelina with grandpa A.C.. They enjoyed the camping with A.C. more than even the hunt. He taught the boys how to drive their first vehicles in his Jeep. He taught them gun safety and sportsmanship and how to cook in the wild, and even how to skin a squirrel. Rodger, Greg and Michael each bagged their first big game animals hunting with grandpa A.C. Rodger had a particularly strong relationship with his grandpa, often calling A.C. when he got into trouble, even before he would call his dad!
After Gladys Stout passed away in 1995, A.C. moved to Buhl where he married Dixie and lived for the past 25 years.
He was fond of his brothers and sisters-in-law and he and his son, Tom spent many evenings playing cards or just visiting. They loved being rockhounds and were active in the local Rock Club where A.C. even served as President (reluctantly!).
A.C. loved watching old black and white western movies on TV and chewing on a toothpick. He watched some of them so many times that he could tell you what was going to happen before it even happened, but he still enjoyed watching them.
His son Tom reported that A.C. passed away quietly in his home on November 28, 2023, at the age of 88.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 18, 2023, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1001 Fair Ave., Buhl, with a viewing beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial will conclude at the West End Cemetery, 1574 E. Elm St., Buhl.
