Jack Lionel Corey
September 27, 1935 - February 4, 2022
Jack Lionel Corey, 86, a long-time Rupert resident, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2022, at Autumn Haven Assisted Living Facility, in Rupert.
Jack was born to Emer Lionel and Pearl Geraldine (Trask) Corey in Nampa, Idaho, on September 27, 1935. He has a younger brother, Fred. He graduated from Nampa High School in 1953.
Jack started his life-long career with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1953, and retired in 2000, with 47 years of service. He also served in the Naval Reserve for two years, being honorably discharged in 1961. He owned many cars in his younger years which he would fondly remember and wished he had kept. He was an avid bowler and won many awards and was part of many championship teams. He met and married Jane Helsley in 1961. He and Jane had two children, Jeff and Susan. They resided in Granger, Utah for a short time and then moved to Burley, Idaho in 1965, and then finally settled in Rupert, Idaho in 1973, on a five-acre mini-farm.
He took up golf after moving to Rupert and became an avid golfer at Rupert Country Club for 37 years. He also enjoyed fishing and spent many years traveling to Alaska for a yearly fishing trip with the "guys". Dad and Mom also took an annual trip to Lewiston where they would spend seven weeks steelhead fishing on the Snake and Salmon Rivers with friends and family. Here they befriended locals Bill and Rebecca Correll and camped on the edge of the Snake River for over 20 years at "Camp Corey". He named several fishing holes including the "JD" hole which was named after himself and Don Coleman after they discovered its great potential.
Jack was a member of the Elks for 64 years and spent time at the Rupert Elks after golfing at the "19th hole".
Jack is survived by his children, Jeff (Teresa) Corey of Bothell, Washington, and Susan (Kevin Lyons) Tankersley of Greenbank, Washington; granddaughter, Heather Corey of Post Falls, Idaho; and grandson, Zachary Tankersley of Sammamish, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane; and his grandson, Ryan Corey.
At his request, no service will be held. Donations in his memory can be made to the Idaho Youth Ranch in Boise, Idaho.
