Tom Chivers was a very innovative and successful coach. When he and I were coaching 8th grade football together, and, going up against the undefeated Wendell Trojan team, we implemented a strategic defense to stop the 40 points per game Trojans. At halftime we were tied. At halftime, we set up our defense once again to make sure the team understood our strategy. As we looked on at our team we noticed a problem. We had played the entire first half in a 5 4 3 defense. One to many players. Oops. Luckyy that Tom was a math teacher. No refs , varsity coaches or fans noticed it. We laughed and Tom said, maybe we should add a player until they catch us. Haha. Unfortunately, we played with 11 and lost. Tom will be greatly missed.
