Albert A. Matasy

BOARDMAN - Albert A. Matasy, 91, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Albert was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Youngstown, a son of the late Albert and Helen Timko Matasy, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1951 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Youngstown State University. Albert dedicated more than four decades to the banking industry, beginning in 1951 with Union National Bank, later Bank One. Rising through the ranks, he was named assistant vice president in 1967, vice president in 1971, and senior vice president in 1982. At the time of his retirement, he served as Public Affairs and Community Reinvestment Act Officer for Bank One, Youngstown, and also secretary of the board of directors. Albert was deeply involved in the community through professional and civic organizations. He was past president of the Youngstown American Institute of Banking, first president of the Youngstown Business Incubator, and volunteered in leadership roles with the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, and many local committees and boards. Albert was a devoted member of St. Columba Parish, Sts. Peter & Paul Croatian Catholic Church. He was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America and served as vice president of St. George Croatian Lodge No. 66. He was also a former member of the Penn-Ohio Polka Pals and their booster club. A lifelong musician, he was a talented drummer who played with the Johnny Butchko Band and Joe Fedorchak Band, and recorded with the Bob Matasy Band. He especially enjoyed cruises and festivals where music brought people together. Albert was also an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians, Browns, Cavaliers, and the YSU Penguins. He loved family trips to Wildwood, N.J., visits to Geneva-on-the-Lake, and casino getaways. Most of all, he cherished time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing Sequence around the table, where his laughter and competitive spirit shone brightest. Albert is survived by his three sons, Albert J. Matasy and Edward A. Matasy, both of Boardman, and Robert S. (Lisa) Matasy of Austintown; two grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Matasy, both of Austintown; and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Rylee Matasy, who affectionately called him "Papa Pool Table." He also leaves behind several cousins, nieces and nephews. His wife of nearly 71 years, Maryann Pacic Matasy, whom he married July 10, 1954, died April 11, 2025. Albert will be remembered for his music, his devotion to family, and the joy he brought to all who knew him. Family and friends may gather from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, at Sts. Peter & Paul Croatian Catholic Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Private interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, where Albert will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife. The family would like to thank Ed and Diane Reese and the staff at Briarfield Manor for the care and comfort they provided for the last five months.
