Anne Murphy Obituary

Anne Murphy passed away peacefully with family by her side on January 17th, 2025 the day after her 89th birthday. She was born on January 16th, 1936 in the town of Barrow-in-Furness near the Lake District in Northern England to Arthur and Margaret Currie. As a child, she survived the WWII bombings of her hometown known as the Barrow Blitz. She went on to study nursing at Withington Hospital in Manchester, England and subsequently worked there as a nurse midwife until 1961, when Anne came to the United States to work for a year at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland. She met her husband, Alexander (Alec) Murphy who had also recently arrived in America from Dublin, Ireland. Both decided to stay in the U.S. and they were married in 1968 and moved to Poland, OH in 1974. Anne stayed home when their three children were young, then returned to nursing for Dr. N.J. Hazelbaker doing what she loved, guiding new moms with breastfeeding and taking care of children with love and compassion. Anne had many passions that filled her life with joy. She diligently cheered for her sons' sporting endeavors and her daughter's Irish dancing competitions. She loved to knit and crochet blankets for her grandchildren and created beautiful needlework that was displayed in her home. She enjoyed sharing a great cup of tea with family and friends and loved to watch Wimbledon with her beautiful blue eyes. Typically reserved, she would be more fun to watch than the game when she rooted for the Cleveland Browns. She was married for 53 years until Alec passed away in 2021. Anne is survived by her children, David (Anne) Murphy of Marysville, OH, Stephen (Christine) Murphy of Poland, OH, Laura (Michael) Smith of Somerset, NJ; Anne; grandchildren, Maddie Murphy, Avery Murphy, Kelsey Murphy, Ian (Kali) Murphy, Colin Murphy, Jacob Smith & Molly Smith, great-granddaughter, Harper Murphy; sister-in-law, Anne Currie and nieces, Sarah, Susan, and Nicola all in England. Anne was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ian Currie. The family held a private service and will plan for a celebration of her life in the future. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Anne's name to the American Cancer Society as she was a breast cancer survivor. Hello, I wish to send my condolences to the family of Anne Murphy. I did not know her, but wish I had. I was reading the Obituaries this morning and happened to catch the words Barrow -in-Furness. My grandmother was from Barrow, and I have visited there twice to meet my family that live there.
Ancestry has been my passion and my cousin Rita Jackson, and I have kept in touch. They too had lived through the War of 39, as they called it.
I guess seeing the town and never expecting to find someone that lived in Barrow, just made me write to you. Sincerely, Pam Schaak of Austintown.
