Charles McDanel Obituary

Poland – Charles Francis "Pat" McDanel, 91, of Poland, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, September 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Charles was born on August 14, 1934, in East Palestine, Ohio, the son of Charles F. and Margaret (Gorman) McDanel, and was a lifelong resident of the area. A graduate of East Palestine High School, Charles excelled in baseball and carried that same drive and dedication into his academic and professional life. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Youngstown State University and later received a Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling from Westminster University. Charles began his career with the Columbiana School System as a history teacher before becoming a guidance counselor. He was passionate about education and took great pride in his more than 30-year career, retiring in 1994. Charles cherished the relationships he built with his students and colleagues over the years. A devout Catholic, Charles rarely missed Sunday Mass and was a proud member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, the Ohio Education Association, and the National Education Association. Proud of his Irish heritage, he was also a former member of the Mahoning County Gaelic Society where he received the Gael Of The Year award. Family was the cornerstone of Charles's life. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who made family his top priority - especially his grandchildren, whom he adored. He looked forward to their annual family beach vacations and took great joy in attending their activities. A true sports fan, Charles was a loyal supporter of Notre Dame, the Cleveland Indians, and the Cleveland Browns. Charles leaves behind his beloved wife of over 61 years, Joanne (Emilo) McDanel, whom he married on July 11, 1964; his cherished daughter, Diana (Jeff) Wrataric; and his six adored grandchildren: Ethan, Ellie, Aidan, Jake, Luke, and Allison. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Justine (Paul) Antol; nephews Anthony (Dawn) Antol and Paul Antol Jr.; along with extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, Christopher McDanel. A private funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, Youngstown, with the Very Rev. John Zuraw J.C.L., V.G. officiating. Charles was laid to rest at Poland Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi and Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. John Koval for his many years of compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
