Dolores Canavan Obituary

Boardman - Dolores "Dee" Canavan passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on October 7, 2025. Dee was born May 12,1926 in Youngstown, Ohio. She attended St. Columba elementary school and is a 1943 graduate of Ursuline High School. Dee earned an education and liberal arts degree from Marygrove College in Michigan. In 1949 she married John "Jack" Canavan. Dee was a 71-year member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman. She taught eighth grade language arts at St. Charles School until retirement. Dee was also the first Parish Council President at St. Charles Church. She was devoted to her faith, St. Anthony and our Holy Mother Mary of God. Dee belonged to numerous clubs and organizations over her 99 years. She was politically astute, kept current with events and could complete in their entirety any newspaper crossword puzzle. She was quick witted, graceful and always put family first. Dee's true love was spending time with family. Dee's family traveled extensively crossing over our country, Canada and traveling abroad. She enjoyed cooking for her family on all special occasions and especially the holidays. Her home was always beautifully decorated for every occasion, and full of love and laughter. Dee had a special bond with animals big and small and cared for so many over the years, especially her precious LuLu. Dee is preceded in death by her loving husband, John "Jack" Canavan; her son, George Canavan; and son-in-law, Bill Scheetz. Dee is survived by her six children, Carol McKay (Dave), Jack Canavan (Debbie), Marilyn Scheetz (Jerry Strong), Nancy Solak (Stephen), Sally Canavan (Chuck Johnson) and Patrick Canavan (Patricia); seven grandchildren, Michelle, Jennifer, Kimberly, Kourtney, Patrick, Jack and Frank; and nine great-grandchildren, Tommy, Sonny, Ian, Kenley, Cannon, Aria, Steven, Matty, and Alexandria. Family and friends may call on Monday, October 13, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish - St. Charles Church, 7345 Westview Drive in Boardman. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. at the church with Fr. Edward Brienz officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown. In lieu of flowers, material tributes can take the form of contributions to the donor's favorite animal charity or to Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, 9805 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514 in memory of Dee.
