George Brandenstein Obituary

WILLOUGHBY — George A. Brandenstein, 29, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, after complications from a stroke.

Affectionately called “Georgie” by many, he was born May 16, 1995, in Youngstown, and attended St. Nicholas Elementary School. George graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 2013, where he was an integral part of the basketball team that secured the district championship. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Youngstown State University and worked in a highly technical field at Fusion Inc.

George was preceded in death by grandparents, George and Dorothy Brandenstein, and grandfather, Joseph Koken.

He is survived by his wife, Martha (Guisfredi) Brandenstein, whom he married Oct. 28, 2023. He is also survived by his parents, George W. and Susan Koken Brandenstein; grandmother, Theresa Koken; sisters, Tiffany Ivery (Christopher) and Katelyn Hysell (Staton); brother, Scott Brandenstein and identical twin brother, Christopher Brandenstein; nieces, Mahalia, Louisa and Naomi; and nephew, Oliver.

George also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins and an enormous group of longtime friends, as well as Abby, his very special furry companion.

A natural athlete, George played a myriad of sports all his life. He could often be found shooting hoops or organizing his kickball team. He liked reading a good book, playing “Call of Duty” with his friends or experimenting with new and exotic dishes in the kitchen. When he bought a torch, cresme brulee became his favorite dessert, closely followed by Handel’s chocolate ice cream. He was very disciplined, allowing himself only one Coca-Cola a week as a treat. A kid at heart, George enjoyed board games, riding the coasters at Cedar Point and playing with his nieces and nephew.

He was inquisitive and opinionated, often quick with advice in family group texts, earning him the nickname “Dr. George.” His self-confidence also got him kicked out of many fantasy football leagues.

This avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan fell madly in love with Martha, despite her affinity for the Cleveland Browns. When going for walks together, George would bring birdseed and check on his bird friends. He liked to try to identify birds by their call. The night sky fascinated him and he would point out different constellations to Martha. They took a cooking class and would often go to the theater. George would go to any movie – he was curious about everything.

George was never afraid to live fully, to try new things, visit new places or meet new people. But he will be remembered most fondly for his thoughtfulness, loyalty and love for his wife, family and friends. His twin, Chris, considered him a mentor and inspiration; George’s love for him was endless.

Calling hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, 2726 Center Road, Poland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Brandenstein family, in George’s memory.
